Layla Eden – aka awfultune – is the definition of bedroom pop and her latest EP ‘unreleased demos II’ is what you needed to be convinced. It takes a lot of vulnerability and courage to put together in the same record cogent themes such as mental health, love, growth and the human experience at large but awfultune doesn’t seem to be lacking in the boldness department.
The EP is the natural artistic consequence of 2019’s ‘unreleased demo’ which set the stage for her relatable yet compelling storytelling and helped develop her confessional style of songwriting into what we hear today.
“I’m just making music that feels super authentic to me. I mean, I’ve always done that. But this time really does feel special.”
The EP features three new tracks: ukulele driven “pluto and the moon’ which tells a story of yet another inexplicable toxic relationship, “things” which is about about the simplicity of our surroundings and where she fits into it all and “be ur dog” which is the lead single and features a playful music video
“The music video captures the essence of loneliness, where the main character ‘waits by the door’ like a faithful dog. I wanted the video to feel slow and also chaotic just like each passing second with the absence of your partner.”
Awfultune is on the rise and the captivating allure of their online persona results in hundreds of millions of global streams. Officially evolving out of indie bedroom-pop obscurity and, as an openly transgender woman, they remain a champion for queer representation.
