Rare DM, the Brooklyn-based brainchild of singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Erin Hoagg, shared her new single and video, “Skater Hits Me Harder,” along with House of Feelings Management.. Premiered by FLOOD Magazine, the track is an intoxicating first taste of Rare DM’s next chapter. Gothy, arpeggiated synths provide the song’s feverish pulse that, when paired with Hoagg’s winkingly sultry vocals, results in a hypnotically carnal cut about that good first-date feeling, the foreplay before the foreplay.

“In a perfect world, we would have loved to shoot in a big gorgeous Atonement style library, but we did not have the access or money for that this time. Limitations lead to creative solutions, so we used a projector to change our set & have a dreamworld instead. The video is in my mind, a combination of lust & longing, much like the song…

You see me alone in the real world, in a much more androgynous fit (like I usually wear irl) and then my glammed up studio fits, bringing out my feminine side, when our male lead Nick Flohr is there. I have that duality as a person beyond my personal style, and I am constantly battling trying to “play it cool” versus having my romantic extra ideals take over. I want romance and dancing, to be swept off my feet. The crass lyrics of “fucks me on the bookshelf” and “when I first got off” in the song are a bit of a self drag. My whole life I’ve been incapable of enjoying things for the sake of “casual fun” because if it’s great, why keep it casual? Don’t you wanna do it again? Forever?

The song is my attempt at convincing the Skater in question that I CAN do casual, but really it’s me trying to convince myself that. (It’s a lie!)

I had a bunch of fun editing the video myself and am excited to do more of that in the future! It’s really satisfying and I love the details of going super specific on the frame cuts and making the transitions very movement based. It’s all very intentional and hopefully that is obvious to the viewer. “

“’Skater Hits Me Harder’ is lyrically about banging someone and wanting to do it again, and about realizing that your last lover really sucked. But the feeling behind the song is that nothing is better than that first date kiss — someone holding your hand for the first time. When you don’t know if the date is going well but you have butterflies and are kinda nervous but then they grab your hand and you make out against fences on the way back to your apartment.”
