On “LOVESHY,” that excitement is only part of the story. As the EP unfolds, desire gives way to uncertainty, mistakes, and the consequences of trying to make love work when his own choices keep getting in the way.

Live instrumentation, guitar, funk, and soul give the project much of its warmth, creating a contrast with the uncertainty that runs through its lyrics. Even in moments of confidence and excitement, Derby leaves room for doubt, whether he is questioning a new connection or reflecting on the choices that have complicated past relationships.
“Who’s There For You” finds him paying attention to something easy to overlook. The woman at the center of the song is always taking care of other people, but no one seems to ask whether she receives that same consideration. Derby does. His interest in her is still romantic, but the song makes room for her exhaustion and the responsibility she carries.
“Fine As U” and “Pretty Girl Dangerous,” featuring Bri3, run on immediate attraction, with Derby drawn to women who catch his attention. Their flirtation and straightforward approach bring a lighter energy to the project before its focus shifts toward the uncertainty and consequences that come with more complicated relationships.
“Feels Like Home” offers a clearer idea of what Derby hopes to find once the excitement settles. Home, in this case, is the person around whom he can finally relax. He wants the freedom to lower his guard and stop monitoring how much of himself he reveals. The song is gentle, and the need behind it feels serious. Derby is not simply looking for company. He wants somewhere emotionally safe to land.
The uncomfortable question is whether he knows how to protect that kind of relationship when he has it. “What Then” places him in front of an ex who is preparing to marry another man. Derby imagines that he could win her back, and part of him still speaks as though their history gives him a claim on her future. Yet that same history works against him. He cheated, lied, and withheld the commitment she had asked for. His confidence cannot quite hide the fact that she may have moved on for good reason.
By the time “Fumble” arrives, there is less room for bravado. Derby admits that inconsistency and poor priorities cost him a relationship with someone he also considered his best friend. “Lost in the Moment” gives him a brief escape when the two reconnect, but it is only temporary. Once she leaves, he is back with everything the reunion failed to resolve.
Eli Derby’s “LOVESHY” stays with the contradictions that make love more complicated, as he moves between desire, uncertainty, regret, and the possibility of change. He knows the kind of love he wants, even as he is still figuring out what it takes to hold on to it.
