Brooklyn alt-rock goth-princess America Jayne (moniker for Erica Pierce) is ready. After dropping a series of singles, playing non-stop packed shows across the city, and establishing a name for herself in the Brooklyn DIY scene, Erica is finally ready to announce her debut EP: Homecoming (due out June 2022). With the announcement, she shares lead single “Open Casket”: an alt-rock anthem that cuts deep.

Opening with a minimalistic guitar riff and stripped back vocals à la Soccer Mommy or Julien Baker, “Open Casket” finds us buried deep in America Jayne’s internal psyche: her vulnerabilities and trauma, her desire to connect.

“Told you about that lake just off the highway / Where I almost drowned because it’d been a fucking long day / It’s hard to comprehend that you didn’t know me then / Because I could see you on the sand, following me back with your frantic hands” she sings in her wavering alto, before belting out a bittersweet chorus: “I just wanna be ugly with you / Our open caskets got the prettiest view.”

‘Open Casket’ is a shameless plea for vulnerability. The song explores the beginning of a relationship and the desire to share everything with a person in an attempt to grow closer. The subject is urged to be “ugly” – as the protagonist bares their soul – illustrating their near-death experiences, abuse, and insecurities. ‘Open Casket’ was inspired by the intoxicating feeling of first falling in love and the hunger to devour every little bit of information that person shares with you.”
