Berlin based alt-pop singer-songwriter Novaa returns with a brand new single ‘The World’s Thing’ released this January, lifted from her forthcoming album due later this year.

Novaa lets emotion do the talking, fusing offbeat, unfiltered melodies over irreverent, self deprecating lyricism, ‘The World’s Thing’ might be the antidote we all need right now.

Novaa explains: “The World’s Thing is an ode to the indifference and the apathy caused by the overload this world lays on me sometimes. Shit things happen all around and all the time and they eat me up at times. I needed a song to help me find a lightness and ease in all that, something that turns the drama into a comedy for a short while to make it bearable. This song comforts me and makes me smile even during shit times, and I hope that it does that for others too.“

Novaa’s Top 5 Influences Playlist:

„My Funny Valentine“ – Chet Baker
This song has many different versions and interpretations, and this is one that stuck with me til today. The fragility and brittleness of it gives me goosebumps in the good and uncomfortable kind of way. Chet Baker lets something descructive shine through in this performance, as well as a softness. And it still fascinates and captures me to this day.

„The Wheel“ – SOHN
„The Wheel“ is an indicator of my electronic music making and music producing. I heard this song and loved the simplicity and minimalism of it. So I made a song that started off the same way, with a choir turning into the main instrumental hook of the song. This made me fall in love with music production even more.

„TV-Glotzer“ – Nina Hagen
My dad has her full album as a vinyl with this song on it, and I listened and danced a lot to this song especially. It’s a cover of „White Punks On Dope“ by Tubes. Nina’s attitude on this song and in general impressed and influenced me a lot. She’s a punk queen and one of the most important artists in Germany to me. With her new lyrics she’s criticizing the way we consum and capitalism in this song.

„Schlaflied für Anne“ – Frederik Vahle
My parents used to sing this song to me as a kid, and the melodies and lines of it are probably the most homely thing I will ever hear to me. Inspired by this song I wrote „Universe Lullaby“, my favorite song I ever wrote

Tori Amos – „Me And A Gun“
[TW: rape] Tori was raped as a young woman and talked about it in her songs. She also founded a hotline and network for victims of sexual abuse, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network). Tori is a pioneer and I am grateful for the space she created and opened up for others. I first listened to her record „Little Earthquakes“ when I was a kid, a teenager, a young adult. The older I got, the more things I experienced, the more I understood the lyrics. I’m grateful for this album, it’s my safe space in music. There is no other place that’s as much of a home as this album is.
