Long Beach bedroom-pop auteur Derek Simpson shares his latest song and video “Talking To Strangers” via Trailing Twelve Records. The piece follows a cohesive slate of groove-laden compositions from Simpson and comes with the announcement of his second full-length album, Signs, out August 4th, 2021.
“Talking To Strangers’ is seductively minimal – largely employing a hypnotic loop of rhythm guitars, staccato bass, and confident percussion. Derek elevates the hypnosis by shifting between a casual baritone and mischievous falsetto as he croons the main hook [Evenings on the phone / Talking to strangers / Keep meeting the ghosts / Talking to strangers].
We’re eventually gifted with one of Derek’s signature groove sections – the drums and bass in a comfortable dialogue as Simpson’s vocal floats atop.
Derek Simpson’s upcoming album Signs will be available on digital and limited edition vinyl on August 4th, 2021. Pre-order here: https://stem.ffm.to/signs
How did you get to where you are now?
We could start at the Big Bang, or we could start at the dawn of humankind, or we could start when my parents got together… I don’t know where to start + I don’t really know how i got here, but i’m here. It’s nice to meet you.
How would you describe the highs and lows of being an artist?
They’re probably pretty similar to the highs + lows anyone goes through, except sometimes you want to draw someone naked.
Who are your all time musical icons?
There’s too many to list. Everyone I’ve ever heard.
What are some things to do to keep your inspiration alive?
You could feed it water + let it get proper rest.
Who is an artist that you look up to more than others today?
Chaz Bear.
Favorite activity to blow off some steam?
I like to talk to people + listen to what they have to say.
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
I wrote Talking To Strangers while in a lightly paranoid isolation because if I didn’t write it, I probably would’ve felt worse. Plus I dig a good groovy-spooky tune.
What are some things you do to deal with anxiety and creative blocks?
Walk, drink water, exercise, dance, play… eat, pray, love.
What’s the future looking like for you?
Eventually this body will die, i’d like to keep supplying vibe-maintenance now + beyond
Who inspires your style and aesthetics?
My sister Alex.
What is the achievement or moment in your career you are the most proud of and why?
Last night I purchased a cowbell. I think it’ll be a game-changer.
What do you think is the best way to make it as an artist nowadays?
What is “making it”? I know this is an e-mail questionnaire, but I’d really like you to answer this when you get a moment. Don’t rush, really think about it then let me know what you come up with because I’d like to dig into it with you.
What would you change in the music and entertainment industry especially after this past year?
The music industry itself is changing, right now the best I can do is workshop ideas with other artists on how to make those changes work for us.
