“Love, romantic or not, is gut wrenchingly, torrentially painful. “Love You But It Hurts Like Hell” is a song with a double meaning. The song itself was very quick to write, only taking around 2 hours to have the whole musical idea down. But, the concept manifested quite uniquely. The first meaning is obvious, loving someone can be great and all—whatever, but for the most part it’s miserable. People we love are often the ones who disappoint and hurt us the most. This song is an introspective piece about me and someone in my life, who will remain unnamed. I loved them so deeply, but their reckless and dangerous habits made life so incredibly hard.”
“We don’t get to choose who we love, so we deal with the consequences. The song had this meaning for about a year, which is how long it was written for before I had an epiphany about a second meaning to this song. This correlates to the video as well. Something personal happened in my life where I knew the concept of oppression in religion tied perfectly into this. So many people believe in their faith but are faced with the question of morality when their god and family decides they’re going to hell just for being gay, for example.”
“This is about many different religions. Being who you are, even if you are an angel sent from heaven, makes no difference if you aren’t what they want you to be. So, the music video ties into both concepts, but with a nightmare fairytale type “Twilight Zone” spin on it. This song is very bare bones and was recorded with all the anger and fury it was made from. I decided to add the guitar riff at the beginning last minute, it wasn’t there before. But I am so happy I did because I think it transformed the song. “Love You But It Hurts Like Hell” is a song meant to speak to people. Let them know they aren’t alone in their agony that love brings them. Whether it be your partner, mother, friend, church, or god.”
My EP coming out in March is called Skin, symbolic of the power it holds. The only thing holding all of our insides from falling out is the toughest largest organ in our body, skin. It’s delicate, yet strong. This EP mentions many themes referencing skin, the duality of pain and beauty. It’s definitely one of my most sophisticated works I have released so far, coming out in March. You can come see me play on February 15th at Madame Siam and March 8th at the Viper Room in Los Angeles.”
