“Close” is the latest single by versatile Latinx artist Nikky Bourbon, accompanied by an emotionally resonant music video. Co-written by Nikky Bourbon and Randy Class and produced by Ocho, it pays homage to her partner and impending first child, embodying pure love.
“Close” draws from Bourbon’s personal journey of building a family with her cherished partner. It vulnerably represents the realities of motherhood and family-building, a deeply personal aspect often hidden by artists. In a society that doesn’t empower women in this realm, Bourbon’s choice to showcase her journey becomes an act of empowerment itself—breaking down barriers and destigmatizing pregnancy and motherhood.
The song’s innovative blend of Spanglish lyrics, Afrobeat rhythms, and R&B melodies continues Bourbon’s distinctive sonic identity established in “Don’t Let Me Go.” The music video, directed by Aimee Bringas, intimately captures Bourbon and Copeland’s journey as they welcome their baby boy, celebrating their affection and shared life.
“Close” challenges norms, offering a refreshing perspective on family and womanhood. It’s a testament to Bourbon’s courage and empowers listeners from all walks of life.

How did you come up with this song? It has such a crucial meaning. Was it an instinctive write?
This song was written by Randy class and I! We started it on FaceTime while he was in New York and then finished it at my apartment in LA. He spent the week with me and we just knocked out some ideas but this one was the smoothest and fully formed .
How did motherhood change your life? What is the message there? Especially for young women and female creatives.
There is really no way to put into words how motherhood changes your life. It’s only understandable once someone experiences it for themselves. It makes you realize everything you ever made big was actually very small and puts everything into perspective in a way I imagine an iowaska experience might . The message for female creatives and young women is that you have the entire universe in your box. F what anyone thinks. Do whatever you want to do. Give yourself grace.
What is the definition of pure love to you?
Not to sound cliche , but the purest form of love is the love between a mother and her child. I’ve never experienced anything like it and I’m not sure anything like it exists. But in general, the purest pockets of love can be found in the love we have for each other . And the way god loves us.
What do you think is the first thing you will need to teach your newborn?
To sleep , so I can sleep. Because this shit is crazy. Haha but in all seriousness, whenever he makes the slightest sound I jump for him, because the first thing I want him to know, is he is safe. I imagine the transition from womb to life must feel vulnerable and scary
