The Berlin-based electronic music group GHEIST, known for their innovative approach to house and techno music, is announcing their upcoming single “Lose Control” on their own imprint “Radau.” This marks a debut collaboration with Los Angeles-based singer SOFI, most notably known as the voice and writer behind deadmau5 hit singles “SOFI Needs A Ladder” and “One Trick Pony” from the GRAMMY-nominated album 4×4=12. “Lose Control” will be released in two different versions: “Lose Control (I Won’t Break)” is set for March 14th, and “Lose Control (Take Me High)” for March 28th.
Tell us about this collab and how it’s a full circle moment for you
It’s definitely a special one. Aside from being a huge fan of GHEIST (Filou, Stefan, Henne), I’ve also known the guys since I was a teenager, really – before my move from Germany to the US many moons ago. This collaboration is sort of a testament to how you can, in fact, remain friends with an ex if they don’t suck… haha. Henne and I dated for three years when I was eighteen and have since grown into very close friends over the years.
What does this song mean to you? How did you come up with it?
I love when I get to play with my voice in many different ways, and in this case, adding a softer, more vulnerable approach. Most people are familiar with the vocal stylings I did for deadmau5, which are more aggressive and in-your-face, so it’s surprising to them when they hear me in a different hue. Interestingly, the topline traveled around the world. I wrote it while I was in Australia where the legend Dirty South tracked the vocal idea. I had it in my pocket for a while, and as I was about to board another flight months later returning from Greece, Henne was texting me asking if I had anything for this thing he was working on for GHEIST. We started playing with ideas up until I had to turn my phone off for takeoff!
Why the two versions?
We just couldn’t decide on one cause we loved both! We were going back and forth on which one is better and truly couldn’t kill one off. They both deserve to live!
You mention you wanted to explore the ideas of connection and desire. Can you elaborate?
I wanted to explore and play with the ideas of connection and desire. Seeking balance amidst tension, neither leaning too far in one direction nor the other, I find that decisionsalways seem to want to be made one way or another. However, not resulting in a simple yes or no can keep excitement alive. I believe sometimes we create that sort of ‘drama’ in our own lives for that reason. I wanted to keep the lyrics ambiguous and open for interpretation.
”What are your plans with GHEIST after this release?
We’ll definitely be working on music one way or another. I spent most of January in Berlin working on music with Henne and other talented producers and writers. Filou and Stefan were in LA just a couple weeks ago and we got to perform “Lose Control” live which was fun! More of all of the above.
