Since its launch in 2020, Island Wave has focused on elevating Caribbean culture through music and community engagement, offering a global stage for Caribbean artists to display their talents.
Founded by artist Kalpee and Miss Vivianna from FVP Global, a Brand Marketing and Management company, Island Wave has quickly made a significant impact worldwide. The organization’s commitment to promoting Caribbean culture is evident through its vibrant musical events and community initiatives.
This past March, Island Wave celebrated its fourth successful show at SXSW, serving as the Official Afro-Caribbean Stage. The Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas, came alive with dynamic performances, reflecting the richness of Caribbean music.
The 2024 lineup boasted a diverse range of heritage artists. Highlights included Prince Amine (Antigua/Morocco), Mauvie (Ghana), and BBC Radio Wales presenter Aleighcia Scott (Jamaican-Welsh). Supported by MusicTT, Tobagonian artist XAV delivered a standout performance ahead of his autumn EP release. Jamaican stars Sevana and Hector “Roots” Lewis, both featured in “One Love,” also graced the stage.
Recognizing the importance of addressing social issues within the Caribbean community, Island Wave spearheads the #RootsRhymesResilience Campaign. Aligned with Caribbean Heritage Month and Windrush Day, this initiative celebrates the enduring spirit and traditions of the Caribbean islands. Through this platform, artists serve as cultural ambassadors, sharing their narratives to foster unity and cultural pride.
Island Wave’s efforts at SXSW have been praised for their ability to bring together established and emerging Caribbean artists. The stage showcases a diverse mix of genres, such as reggae, dancehall, and calypso, promoting unique genre-blending collaborations that captivate audiences.
Haitian artist J Perry headlined the event with an electrifying debut performance. Joined by Haitian hip-hop queen Kanis, the pair performed their hit single “Ayyy” and delivered powerful messages about Haiti’s current struggles. Reflecting on the experience, J Perry remarked, “My first time at the Island Wave South by Southwest show was amazing. It’s a true magical movement connecting Island talents.”
Brian Hobbs, Director of Music Fest Programming at SXSW, highlighted Island Wave’s importance: “This marks our fourth year supporting Island Wave. Their efforts in showcasing Caribbean creatives on an international platform are commendable. We eagerly anticipate their return at SXSW 2025.”
Island Wave remains dedicated to celebrating and promoting Caribbean artistry, fostering a vibrant community through music. With submissions now open for the 2025 lineup, the platform encourages Afro-Caribbean artists to join their mission of showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean on a global stage.
