Stockholm-based electronic duo Hatif, formed in 2020 by Markus Majdalani and Johan Eckerström during the pandemic, is still early in its journey but has already begun to make its mark in the electronic and post-punk scene. Their music blends cool, northern synths with warm undertones inspired by Middle Eastern traditions, exploring themes of emotion, tension, and rebellion in both sound and visuals.
“We’re still finding our way between accessible melodies and harsher, industrial soundscapes,” says Johan. Their 2022 debut album, Everything Is Repetition, introduced themes of distance, connection, and life’s repeating cycles. Using analog synths, deep basslines, and eerie melodies, they aimed to create a sound that feels unsettling yet familiar, reflecting the fragmented world we live in.
Their new single, “Broken Bucket,” explores familiar themes but with a more direct, raw sound. “It’s about conflict and loss, but also about pushing through tough times,” Markus explains. While this track stands apart from the broader direction of their upcoming material, it offers a glimpse into Hatif’s evolving sound as they continue to experiment and refine their music, with a full-length album planned for early 2025.
