How did you become an artist?
When I was a kid I’ve always loved creating things. I used to also dabble in writing short stories and poetry (none of it being any good) and also always loved music so it was inevitable that eventually I’d try my hand at creating music! Once I did, there was no going back.
How do you think this record is different from your past ones?
This record is different from Wave Break’s Amory EP because it’s more emo and alternative rock, whereas the old one was more pop punk. Also, this one was more of a solo album than that EP since I wrote all of the songs myself and worked on them with a producer, rather than working on them with bandmates. The process of putting it together was very different.
Favorite track on the record and why?
My favorite track on it is “Stop the Car” for a couple different reasons. One, it means a lot to me because I wrote it when I was at my lowest mentally because a lot of things were going wrong in my life and I just wanted it all to stop. It’s a very personal song. Two, I also just really love the vibe of the song. It’s very upbeat and fun, but it’s also very emotional. So it’s kind of the best of both worlds.
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing the album?
Nothing particularly since this writing and recording process was very streamlined and nothing out of the ordinary really happened. But I do think it’s funny how our single Out of Breath from last year was written at the same as the songs on this EP, and it was about feeling overwhelmed with lineup changes in the band. At the time of recording that song Wave Break only had two members, but then I was basically solo for this EP so Wave Break ended up downsizing even more. That song ended up becoming even more accurate to Wave Break’s history after it even came out.
What’s a record that shaped your creativity?
There are two highly influential albums in my life that I think shaped this record. Avril Lavigne’s “Under My Skin” definitely influenced the dark, sad vibe of this EP. That album had a large hand in making me the person and artist that I am today. The other record is “Phantoms” by Acceptance. When I heard that one it became an instant classic for me because of the top notch songwriting and guitar work. That album influenced the upbeat vibe of the instrumentals on this one, especially on “Stop the Car.”
Who is an artist or band you look up to these days?
They’ve been inactive for a bit but I very much look up to Tonight Alive. I really love their music and I find them as a band to be very inspirational. They just started posting on Instagram again recently so I’m hoping they start putting out new music again soon!
Any future projects?
Yes! Wave Break will be working on more new music very soon. I hope to have more music out sometime next year.
What does music mean to you?
Music has always been a way to express myself in ways that I can’t with words alone. Whenever I’m down about something or need to get something off of my chest, music has always been there. It’s basically my therapy.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Wave Break’s sound is very raw, energetic and rhythm-driven. The songwriting is at times pretty sassy in terms of lyrics, but also now very mature. It’s the perfect soundtrack for when you need to blow off some steam, when you’re on your morning run or when you’re alone and feeling sad.
