It’s been a milestone year for rock duo Deap Vally. 2021 marks ten years since the Los Angeles-based twosome, comprising Julie Edwards and Lindsey Troy, first came together. Rising up like a pair of brazen rock goddesses, they’ve stormed the barricades of the music industry, amassing over 50 million streams worldwide through playlists such as Spotify’s All New Indie, Walk Like A Badass, Women Of Rock, New Noise and Rock Hard and Apple Music’s Zane Lowe Radio, Breaking Rock and Bringing Back The Rock.
Plus, they’ve played huge festivals like Glastonbury and Bonnaroo. But make no mistake, with success so often fraught with pitfalls, it’s no small feat for any band to stay together for that long. Deap Vally have a true partnership made up of trust, understanding and a shared sensibility.
“Being in a band is like being in a marriage,” says Deap Vally. “Sometimes it’s magical, sometimes it’s unbearably challenging.”
The aptly titled Marriage was the Deap Vally’s highly anticipated third album following the notable success of their explosive 2013 debut, Sistrionix, and Femejism in 2016. The notion of connection runs like a charged conduit through the 12 tracks.
Tell us about the genesis of Deap Vally?
Well, just a couple of girls who met at a crochet class and decided to start a rock band. I know it sounds like fiction, but it is in fact true.
How did you get to where you are now?
Wow. Well, years of schlepping gear, band practices, gigs, years of touring and four records! Can’t complain.
What is the favorite song you wrote and why?
Wow. That’s really so hard. Like picking a favorite child. They’re kind of all my favorites to be honest. ‘Give Me a Sign’ is probably one of my all-time favorite songs I ever wrote, but a real departure, sonically, for Deap Vally, because when I wrote it I actually intended for it to be on a solo record, but it was just too good and we decided to put it on this record. It’s the most personal song I’ve ever written, about a very difficult period of my life. Love ‘Gonna Make My Own Money’ – Deap Vally in its purest form. Love ‘Baby I Call Hell’ – the first song we ever wrote and just simple bluesy rock and roll goodness. Another fave – ‘Royal Jelly’ – is like the ultimate rhythmic funky song with a super catchy guitar line.’Perfuction’ kicks off our latest record, Marriage, and it is a messy, manic punk rock anthem. Love our banger ‘Phoenix’ and our ominous song ‘Boy You Better Run’.
Who are your all time musical icons?
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Queens of the Stone Age, The White Stripes, Nirvana, Hole.
What are some things to do to keep your inspiration alive?
Listening to music I love, and booking myself in to a rehearsal room for a few hours to write – away from all distraction.
Who are you binge listening to these days?
Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Gerry Rafferty, Angel Olsen, and my boyfriend’s electronic project – Yoshi Sherma.
Favorite movie or TV show?
Favorite Movie is The Birdcage. Favorite TV show is Game of Thrones. I was years late on that one. I finally binge-watched it during the beginning of the pandemic.
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about?
Our latest record, Marriage, was a compilation of music we wrote over the last several years. We wrote a large portion of the record in the studio, which was a new thing for us. We have some incredible features on there by some seriously talented friends of ours. We love it and hope you love it too.
Do you have any peculiar pre or post show rituals?
Yes! Stretching, make-up and listening to bangers!
What’s the future looking like for you?
Touring and more writing! Hope to see you on our upcoming tour!!!
Who inspires your style and aesthetics?
Debbie Harry, Courtney Love, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Nicks, Jack White
What is the achievement or moment in your career you are the most proud of and why?
Oh damn, um probably performing on the British music television show Later… with Jools Holland.
What do you think is the best way to make it as an artist nowadays?
Man. For fame, I guess maybe TikTok. But for ART, dedication and hours spent working at your craft. And fearlessness.
What would you change in the music and entertainment industry especially after this past year?
I’d love for people to be super present and not holding their phones constantly during shows. I’d also love for us to get to lose these masks soon. There’s something way too dystopian about not getting to see human faces anymore.
