The journey to the creation of “Hurricane” was as unexpected as the track itself. In search of a vocalist, a call was put out on a Reddit channel, leading to an unexpected connection with vocalist Jay Miles. Despite an initial period of silence, Miles returned with vocals that were nothing short of perfect for the track. His unique voice added the final touch to our musical concoction, resulting in a track that’s ready to make waves in the music industry.
We sat down with Lars to discuss his new track as well as his view of the electronic music scene today:
What’s your favorite thing about the NYC electronic music scene?
The people—always. NYC’s energy is brimming with deep individuals who are open-minded to new experiences. Many are devoted not only to their careers but also to other hobbies and interests. As they say, the only thing worse than living in New York is not living in New York.
Do you have a favorite venue or festival you played so far?
Choosing a favorite is tough! I love nightclubs as much as intimate private gigs. Recently, in October, I played at a small Manhattan club called Virgo. The top-notch sound system allowed me to express my artistry and showcase my DJ skills. After two and a half hours, I left feeling incredibly satisfied.
Tell us about your new single and what inspired it
I was playing with different bassline styles which include a “rolling bass” similar to a trance style. Then I played around with a melodic techno type of bass that had that hard-punching and stagnant feel similar to my tracks on my Journey of the Soul EP. From there I connected the two, which you can hear in the track on good speakers how the bassline flips. It sort of pieced itself together once I laid down chords to it. I changed the piano chords to some trance and rave sounds. From there I used an arpeggiator to stitch together the build up. The basslines were already hitting quite hard and doing a lot of the heavy lifting ( as they should imo ), so from there I just layered in the percussion and some rave fills and it was ready for a vocalist.
Why Jay Miles as a vocalist?
This is truly an interesting story. I had made a reddit post about needing a vocalist for a trance style track. I received an PM on reddit from a random reddit handle with an email to send the track to. Sent the track and never heard anything for a month or two and figured it was just lost in the wind. All of a sudden, I got an instagram DM from jay miles saying he emailed me back the track with the completed vocals. He crushed it. There was no doubt in my mind I needed anyone else to try this out with. The vocals fit perfectly.
Who are your favorite musicians at the moment?
My favorites will always be Ax, Seb and Steve from the Swedish House Mafia. They are my greatest inspirations alongside Daft Punk. I am also fascinated by Tiesto and Alesso’s ability to continue to stay at the top of their games; Alesso is on fire right now. Furthermore, I must give a shoutout to two of my favorite producers in the game; Volaris and Max Styler. Both of them are incredible artists and I have had the opportunity to meet them both and they are just cool and humble guys who love making music. Lastly, I have been really into GENIESI and PARISI, two Italian groups who are bringing such raw sounds to the game. And GENESI if you are reading this, let’s play some tennis!
