How did Myfly start?
We met in college about four years ago; both of us were studying in the same creative arts program. In the first semester, we created our music duo, which was originally under a different name than Mayfly. Initially, we only posted cover songs on YouTube. That’s how we started singing together. The following semester, we took our project a step further; we changed our name to Mayfly and co-produced our three first singles, with the help of our mentor.
By the end of college, people were really vibing with our music and this gave us a huge push to create more original songs. We graduated and moved to Montreal to pursue our career as independent, emerging artists. Since then, we’ve had many awesome opportunities. We’ve equipped ourselves with lots of gear and made our first home studio.
The pandemic gave us the time to create our first ever fully self-produced EP, ESSENCE. Now, after three years of being fully independent, we’re signed to the most amazing Montreal label, “DUPRINCE”, and they are helping us push forth our upcoming EP and loads of other cool stuff!
What is your favorite song you wrote and why?
We both agree that our favorite song so far is “show me the way out”, which is the last track on the EP. This song was really a stepping stone for us in terms of writing and production. Both the structure of the song and the vocal harmonies/melodies are very complex and super different from our other singles.
It’s also the first time that we felt we could continue writing a song forever. “show me the way out” is such a personal song to us and it’s like an extension of our feelings, in a way. We wanted this song to feel like a breath of fresh air, after having been repressed underwater for so long. This song was our way out of a toxic and unpleasant state of mind.

What are some things to do to keep your inspiration alive?
– Watching movies and basing our songs off those storylines or the relationship between certain characters
– Reading books
– Travelling and seeing the world
– Meeting new people and hanging out with friends: we write a lot of songs based on experiences or stories of others around us.
– Listening to music everyday and trying to discover different artists, genres (artists inspire artists)
– Photography and video making: visuals are SUPER important for us in the creation of our songs. Sometimes the visual will come before a song and actually help shape the direction of it. Our songs each have their own visual universe.

Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
Our latest release is “when all we knew was us”, the second track off the EP which we also used as a focus track for the mini album. This song really helped shape the direction of ESSENCE. While writing the song, we realized that we wanted all the other tracks of the EP to sound as vulnerable and raw as this one. “when all we knew was us” is meant to make you feel nostalgic and reminiscent of a time where you were once vulnerable towards someone.
So far, we are absolutely blown away by the response. We are getting swarmed by messages of love and support by our listeners and we even received videos of people crying to our song. It’s amazing to know that our song touches people that way, the same way it touched us.
New projects for the future?
We already have a lot of projects in mind for the future. This EP is just the beginning. Our goal is to make an album this year, and we’ve already started lining up the tracks that we want to put in the album. It’s going to be a whole different project and we’ll be working and experimenting with more music genres that really appeal to us. We are constantly evolving as artists and we feel it’s important to try out as many things as we can, to discover ourselves fully. We want to write and produce different styles of music to see where exactly we fit in all of them.
In parallel to the creation of our first album, we will be building a live show this summer to be able to perform in the fall time. We’re hoping to be able to travel for shows!! – Our all time goal is to be able to live solely from our music and to make it our full-time career.
Who inspires your style and aesthetics?
EUPHORIA is a big inspiration when we’re creating any visuals for our songs. We can’t seem to detach ourselves from the aesthetic world of this series. The colorful makeup, the glitters, the rhinestones, the clothes… we try to incorporate that in our style when we do live shows, when we film videos, etc.
What is the achievement or moment in your career you are the most proud of and why?
The release of our EP, ESSENCE. We feel it’s such a turning point in our career. We have been working so hard on it, putting our most vulnerable and authentic emotions in the creation of each song. The EP represents such a huge part of who we were personally during the pandemic, and we are now turning the page on all this.
It’s a good feeling. We are letting go of lots of dark emotions and states of mind. The release of ESSENCE also marks the end of our career as independent artists and the beginning of a great, wonderful adventure with our label and our new team.
What do you think is the best way to make it as an artist nowadays?
Find an artistic direction that fits you and stick to that for as long as you’re vibing with it. Be yourself, be authentic in your creative process. For us, we realized that being so vulnerable and transparent in the way we share our music, really helped listeners connect to us. We have changed our artistic direction many times in the years that Mayfly has existed.
We haven’t been shy to explore different musical and aesthetic styles because our taste and identities have changed a lot in the past years. We’ve always stayed true to what we’re feeling in the moment and we have pushed our ideas to their fullest potential. If people feel connected to your music and to you, as an artist, then we feel that’s how you will “make it”.
