DuBois Harris’ professional engagement with Franklin began when Franklin requested her to perform a series of concert events for the Queen of Soul including Aretha Franklin Presents: A Two Night Revival, Aretha Presents: GospelFest and Aretha Franklin Presents: The Gospel Legends
Tell us about the genesis of your project
The creation of LIFT EVERY VOICE started with my manager, Eric Palmquist and I. Coming out of the height of the global pandemic and social unrest that we experienced in 2020, the importance of creating such a project of hope and unity became even more evident as we moved further into the recording phase.
How did you get to where you are now?
It always starts with my faith in God. I’m always thankful to Him for the artistic ability, wisdom, and strength to do what I do while burning the midnight oil and putting in the necessary work to expand my craft, artistry, and career. There are also many connected dots in my life that include great people and great opportunities that helped propel me forward to where I am at this particular point in my career.
What does music and being an artist mean to you?
Music and being an artist is directly linked to who I am as a human being. It is as much a part of what uniquely identifies me as Audrey DuBois Harris as my fingerprints and DNA. I don’t think of music and being an artist as something outside of myself. I recall singing my prayers as a child to feel closer to God. For me, it’s just as essential to my existence as my breath and sight.
What are some sources of inspiration for your singing and music?
I draw musical inspiration from different sources such as culture, art, film, fashion, sports, faith, and other life experiences.
Who is an artist that you look up to more than others today?
I listen to a wide array of musical styles that encompasses various artists, genres, cultures, and languages. Although I esteem many artists, it would be very challenging to choose just one.
Favorite activity to blow off some steam?
As an artist, entrepreneur, wife, and mom, I’m always on the move. Going to the spa is always a much-needed treat and time of renewal.
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
My new album is called LIFT EVERY VOICE. It is a project of unity intended to uplift and celebrate all of our diverse voices. During the pandemic, in addition to our mandated social distance, we also witnessed great and unsettling social unrest. Seeing so much hurt and pain in America and across the globe, I wanted my artistic offering to the issues at hand to be that of peace, unity, and hope for the future. Each song was intentionally selected to connect our humanity and our brotherhood at its core as Americans.
You seem to be fusing classical with soul and other musical genres. What inspires your sound?
As a native of Miami, FL, I grew up listening to various styles of music. As a kid, I was introduced to salsa, merengue, kompa, gospel, classical, jazz, and world music. I was also raised in the Baptist church where I learned the great hymns and anthems of the church. These musical styles still influence and inspire my approach to music and sound today.
What are some things you do to deal with anxiety and creative blocks?
If I experience anxiety, I usually pray and breathe slowly. For creative blocks, I find that it is helpful to take a break and return with fresh ears at a later time.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I look forward to many LIVE performances, touring, and several more albums added to my catalogue. A GRAMMY or two…or more would also be nice!
What was the most daunting moment in your career so far?
I haven’t had a “most daunting moment in my career” as of yet. I believe in being prepared for the opportunity. As in all careers, there will be challenges that will need to be addressed. Handle them accordingly and continue to move forward.
What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
It’s important to be resilient and determined to let nothing nor anyone stop you. Never quit!
