Drawing inspiration from the ‘Bristol Sound’ and 90s soundtracks, ‘God Complex’, out 22nd November, is about the interplay between ambition, nihilism and grief in the era of Main Character Syndrome. The accompanying music video was shot in a disused Tasmanian print factory and directed by Gabriel Morrison.
It offers a dystopian vision of a world left behind, seamlessly blending 16mm footage with Matrix-influenced visuals. The electroacoustic downtempo track features haunting vocals and a mind-bending EWI (electronic wind instrument) solo alongside shakuhachi flute, the Chinese erhu and the primal jaguar whistle – unmoored from their traditional contexts.
“In its most literal sense, God Complex is about a lover en route to another galaxy—the ultimate long-distance relationship. But the relationship is a microcosm for bigger questions, like whether technology is saving us or destroying us? The song emerged from conversations around tech billionaires like Elon Musk, and the idea of someone on a mission to colonize space – the complicated ethics of that – and the feelings of a lover left behind.”
“The song aligns with this feeling of ‘Endcore’, the idea that we are living in a post-everything world, where the ground is constantly shifting, but the apocalypse never actually hits.”
“For each song in our upcoming 2025 EP, we’ve created distinct cinematic visual worlds, each with a slightly different musical language, but all within an experimental electronic space. Each track and music video reimagines our relationship in different scenarios – whether that’s dystopian futures or strangely nostalgic places.”
