JVLY (pronounced JULY) is a project from Australian singer/songwriter/producer Kayle Butler, who makes chilled indie-R&B/soul music that can be likened to a mix between NEIL FRANCES, LEISURE and The Internet.
This week JVLY is excited to announce that he has a new concept ep on the way titled “SUNDER”, and with that news also comes its first preview with the gloriously smooth sounds of new single ‘SOUTH’.
“SOUTH is the first song I finished for SUNDER, and it’s the first glimpse of that world I’m trying to bring you into with this project. SUNDER is a concept EP that has a through line connecting it all. It’s also visually inspired by films like ”Enter The Void” and “Requiem for a Dream”.
SOUTH started with an idea my friend Cal (from daste.) had sent me a while before. He co-produced it with me. The track touches on the inevitable loops we find ourselves in sometimes, even when we know better. When reason is there to see but you kind of look away. The wonky keys and the constant groove give it this driving energy, and I like the irony of that.”
What’s the story behind SUNDER?
There’s a thread that connects the songs in SUNDER. When I was writing the songs I realised I had kind of been telling different parts and perspectives of the same story, so it felt like it should be a project at that point. I watched a movie around that time called Enter The Void, and visually it really just sparked an idea in my head about how I could create a world for the story to grow in and be told through.
Why do you think South was the first track that came out of you for this?
It actually wasn’t, it just made sense for it to be the first part of the project that people hear.
Why did you choose this title? Any events or life experiences inspired it?
SOUTH talks about the loops we all find ourselves in sometimes. Everyone’s are different I guess, but we all have them. You know when you sense it but you look away?
Who or what inspires your storytelling and lyrics?
I think it’s a mixture of real life events and things that inspire an idea in me, like words or visuals or music. So the stories turn out kind of hyper real.
What was it like working with Cal from daste?
Cal is a friend of mine since I supported the daste boys on tour, and we’re into a lot of the same kinds of music, so it was a pretty natural back and forth as it evolved.
Who is your favourite artist of all time?
I’ve tried to narrow it down to one, I can’t do it. This month it’s D’Angelo.
How did you guys approach the production here?
Cal had sent me an idea a while back which I revisited and started playing with and building on. Once I had a solid song idea, I sent it back to him to add some finesse.
What was the best piece of advice you ever got?
To not overthink. I’m still working on that.
What can we expect from you after this track?
The rest of my upcoming project SUNDER is on the way!
