Following its premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival this past weekend, today, multi-award-winning NYC-based Canadian-filmmaker Kris Lefcoe shared her hallucinatory stop-motion video + single, “Booked A Room.” The music video is competing in the Tribeca Online Music Video Competition against nine other artists including Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa, Black Crowes and Tyla and is screening theatrically as part of Tribeca’s Short Film lineup in the program Pride, No Prejudice. “Booked A Room” is Lefcoe’s solo debut, combining her filmmaking and songwriting for the first time.
“‘Booked A Room’ is inspired by a true story about the time when, in the depths of the pandemic, I was so overwhelmed taking care of my family and suppressing my emotions to protect them, that I checked into a motel room just to have a place to cry. This ‘scheduled nervous breakdown’ didn’t work – I couldn’t even eke out a tear – so I wrote the song instead, then became determined to create the tidal wave of tears I couldn’t manifest in real life, on screen. The video was shot frame by frame using antiquated technology – a multi-plane down-shooter like the one Walt Disney used for Bambi – with a doll, some old motel postcards, and three industrial-sized tubs of hair gel for the tears.” – Kris Lefcoe
