18 year-old London based Lia Rye has just dropped her new single “Habits” tells the story of a self-centred person building their own reality to the detriment of others and eventually themselves. Brooding guitars, fierce vocals and pounding drums create an overall determined and assured atmosphere.
Her latest single “Habits” tells the story of a self-centred person building their own reality to the detriment of others and eventually themselves. By the track’s conclusion, they accept that they’ll never be what others want them to be, defiantly yet sadly welcoming this realisation.
The artist shares, “It’s sort of bittersweet as I learnt not to make excuses for unacceptable behaviour, but I had to ponder on the journey it took for me to gain that understanding.” Ultimately, “Habits” is about not caring what people think no matter whether you’re the villain or the hero.
What inspired this last release?
The song is from a few years ago when I knew someone who didn’t make the best decisions for themselves or those around them. I felt bad so I wrote the song from their perspective, making an excuse for their actions. With hindsight, it was pretty naive of me and ‘Habits’ has grown from that point.
What is something you can’t live without?
Probably my Mac, my whole music life is on there aha.
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?
I can’t play guitar. Whilst recording the song I had to come up with a guitar riff for the chorus, so Joe (producer) and I were sat thinking. Something came to mind but since I can’t play, I was going “doo do doo do do doo na na na na na na na na” (it makes a lot more sense when you listen to the track). It was so silly, but that riff ended up being my favourite part of the song!
What’s your favorite thing to do besides music?
Probably watch documentaries, especially mysteries and true crime. I’m a huge fan of those.
What’s a record or artist that shaped your creativity?
‘Melodrama’ by Lorde.
Who is an artist or band you look up to today?
Gosh there are so so many. I’d say musically, Florence + the Machine. Absolutely insane.
What excites you the most about what you do?
Probably breaking stereotypes and being a part of the refreshing change happening within the UK music scene.
