A pop anthem of self-love, an antidote to loneliness,”Don’t Worry” is an uptempo elixir of live and programmed drums with infectious syncopation alongside vulnerable lyrics, inspired by the swagger of Dua Lipa, Litany, and Sigrid.

“I wanted to write a song I could dance to, to shake off negativity, and get myself out of bed to make that cup of coffee in the morning and get dressed. I needed it as my own antidote to loneliness and self doubt. It became a reminder that I could be my own cheerleader and push myself out of a funk.”

Sophie encourages the idea of being a heroine of love for ourselves and others, singing “Don’t worry Honey / I’ll fight for you / I’m gonna cover you with my love.”

Recorded at Degraw Sound in Brooklyn, New York with co-producer Ben Rice (Valerie June, Jonas Brothers, Norah Jones), Sophie layers intoxicating rhythm with flecks of keyboard glitter and lush harmonic vocals to build a pop fortress of sonic Love that has always resided within us.

Tell us Don’t Worry and what prompted you to write it

SC: A lot of my songs have been downtempo, and I wanted to write a song I could dance to, to shake off negativity, and get myself out of bed to make that cup of coffee in the morning and get dressed. I wrote it during the pandemic as a letter of comfort to myself, an antidote to loneliness and self doubt. It evolved into this anthem that I hope resonates with anyone who’s in a dark funk. It’s a reminder that we can be our own cheerleaders and love ourselves enough to pull ourselves back up.

What’s something you always do to clear your mind and stop worrying?

SC: I try to do something physical to extract myself from the current environment, or eat something delicious, or both. It usually involves a solo dance party, or a brisk walk outside while being mindful of taking deep breaths, saying hi to strangers, and finding a good spot for a glass of wine. Or I’ll take a drive to the James River and hop over rocks for a while. Taking myself out of my head is the goal.

What inspires your storytelling and lyrics?

SC: I draw a lot of inspiration from personal experience, my relationships, my neighborhood, and imagining what it’s like through another person’s world. A mood or feeling usually compels me to start writing. Sometimes inspiration is sparked by a piece of conversation I overheard or had with someone.  For “Don’t Worry,”’ it was a conversation with myself, turned into a storyline.

Do you remember the artist or record that made you want to become an artist yourself?

SC: Karen Carpenter comes to mind, then Madonna. They are quite unrelated in their aesthetics and sound, but when I first heard them they both had their confident persona and style and shared it with the world in an engaging way. Naively I thought they just always looked so cool, without understanding what it really meant to write songs or what that could be like.

What’s your 2023 looking like?

SC: 2023 is looking exciting! I’ll be releasing a new single every month until May, when the full EP comes out. It’s forcing me to focus, which can be challenging, but it’s all good. I can’t wait for everyone to hear the full EP and hopefully feel something…and dance.

What is your core message as an artist?

SC: Keep believing in love – it’s out there for all of us.
