“Weird!” is a single off your upcoming project. Can you tell us what this song means to you? What was your process like writing and recording it?
“weird!” is the cutesy love song of the ep. I really wanted a drunken, straight-from-the-heart, stream of consciousness about feeling like you’re falling in love. I actually wrote it drunk so it’s perfect, later in December I built out the music with my best friend Henry.
We’re so excited about unreleased demos ii. What is the main theme of the EP and what do you want fans to take away from the project?
Thank you I’m excited too! I feel like a lot of my projects often end up having the same story. I like to write about growing from dark places and healing because it’s something i’m always constantly doing. I’d say the theme of the ep is just another part of my story in that way. I think the unreleased demos (old files that just sit around for a while) are the best kind of songs to share. The songs you’re connected to but not quite sure what to do with. I really love those, and i hope others do too.
When did you start writing these tracks and why did you decide to put them in an EP? Is there an underlying story that connects the songs together?
I’ve been writing for a year or so. Some tracks that I put on the EP were made years and years ago. Aside from matching the first one, the one thing I really wanted to do on this one was take my time. Lots of songs were repurposed and had a lot of new stuff added to them. The way it connects definitely feels like an actual thought-out project from beginning to end even though they are just random demos.
What is your creative process like for songwriting?
It’s always different. I sometimes have thought-out ideas, and sometimes I don’t. I like to use my notes app to write a majority of my music; sometimes, I use voice memos. I either hear a beat and start writing to it or I have a melody I can already hear in my head. It’s a surprise every time.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as an artist?
The best piece of advice I’ve received as an artist was to start believing in myself more. I am my worst critic, and I sometimes downplay myself so much as an artist. For the past year, I’ve been dealing with this mindset, and I even wrote about it in the EP a little. I’m giving myself some more credit these days.
What can we expect from awfultune in 2024?! Is there anything you’re most excited about or want fans to know?
The biggest thing is this EP! I’m so excited for everyone to hear it. I want fans to know that 2018 awfultune is back and this is not a drill.
