Nashville-based pop singer and songwriter Leah Mason reveals her new single, “Klepto,” out on all streaming platforms today.
“Klepto” follows the release of “YOUR BOYFRIEND SUCKS,” an empowering anthem that introduced listeners to Leah Mason’s new pop era. Marrying her penchant for introspective storytelling with catchy melodies and uptempo, alt-pop production, “Klepto” is further proof that Leah has found her place in pop.
Leah’s songs capture the essence of what it means to be a twenty-something woman in today’s world. Diving into themes like heartbreak, friendship breakups, love, loss, and everything in-between, she fearlessly explores the highs and lows of young adulthood with a playful yet unflinchingly honest touch.
What prompted you to write “Klepto”?
“Klepto” was inspired by a bad experience I had with an ex-best friend. It started innocently with her copying me, saying phrases I would say, wearing my clothes, dying her hair like mine, and I tried to chalk it up to a form of flattery. But then it got weird. She started going behind my back to steal my friends and trying to be EXACTLY like me. I had never experienced anything like that before, so naturally I wrote a song about the whole thing. It was actually very therapeutic to get it all out into a song.
Your titles and lyrics are always very blunt. What inspires them?
It’s definitely a facet of my personality. I’m a very forward person, and I say exactly how I feel when I’m feeling it. I normally write songs about things I’m experiencing at the time. During the making of this album, I was going through this friendship breakup that made its way into a lot of the songs. I have to write what I’m feeling in the moment, it’s how I’ve always been.
What’s it like to be a twenty-something woman in today’s world?
HARD. I know they say your twenties are “the best years of your life” but to me it’s been the most confusing. you’re somehow an adult but in my mind I swear I feel 18. Relationships shift, people move… it’s just so much change all at once. That said, I do think your twenties really make you into the person you become, and I’m trying really hard to make that person good.
What was it like to go to Sweden to make your album?
It was truly a dream come true. Everyone I worked with was just such an insane talent, like nothing I’ve experienced before. I felt so inspired and I came in with a lot I knew I wanted to say. Leaving Sweden after that trip was so sad but I knew we got something special.
What made you want to do that? Was there a specific reason you decided to record in Sweden?
So funnily enough, I met this Swedish producer, Simon Jonasson, at a pop camp Warner Chappell put together in Nashville. After the very first song we made together, I knew we couldn’t stop. He stayed in Nashville for a couple more weeks after the writing camp and we were able to work together a few more times. With every song, I felt more and more attached to working with him though, so I convinced my entire team to fly to Sweden with me so he could help me make my album!
What else can we expect from you in the near future?
My album!!! It’s coming out this year and I’m SO excited for everyone to hear it. It’s taken a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but it’s almost ready and I can’t wait to share it!
