Genre-defying artist MYKA releases his new single “gucci bloom” via ESCNT Records. “gucci bloom” is MYKA’s first single release this year, following the recent success of his debut EP WHERE WE GO FROM HERE, which was released last year.

In “gucci bloom,” the songwriter, who continues to push the status quo with his bold conceptualism and experimental poise, reflects on lost love and painful endings as it relates to dating. Inspired by a girl he met onTinder who abruptly cut things off leaving MYKA hurt and confused, the rich and emotionally poignant narrative lets his listeners know exactly what he’s going through, right down to the finest cracks in his broken heart. The song’s title is symbolic of the woman’s favorite fragrance, ‘Gucci Bloom’, and represents the fleeting memory of her scent and the last remaining token of their short-lived romance.

MYKA confides, “I was a little upset. I didn’t like how she did it. The message is basically about not repeating relationships or things over again the same way you did before but with different people. It’s happened to me a bit, but it’s just because I didn’t learn the other times. You gotta stop repeating bad habits. It’ll take time, but no matter what, always choose you first. It happens to the best of us especially when you’re in the moment.”

Featuring unabashed lyricism, warm intimate vocals, and a kaleidoscope of experimental soundscapes, “gucci bloom” is a ruminative late-night vibe that is relatable and cathartic.

What’s your story as an artist?

I started making music at 13 years old at my aunts house in my cousins make shift  studio and from there I just never stopped. I remember the first song I made. My cousin  always made music and one day I was just like I think I can do this. I showed all of my  friends in middle school and they loved it. I’ve always been a creative since I can  remember but music allowed me to step outside of my head and put it in songs. I moved  around a lot when I turned 18 and it gave me the opportunity to get out of my comfort  zone and meet new people and start from nothing and build back up over and over. It’s  giving me a sense of understanding and how to continue being great and I never went  back home ever since

What inspired this last release?

I met a girl on tinder last year and we connected and started spending time with each  other. She was amazing honestly. I remember her wearing a perfume and I asked her  what it was because I’m really into fragrances and she said it was “Gucci Bloom” I was  like that’s great name for a song. It was supposed to be more endearing and sweet but  she cut me off abruptly and I didn’t see it coming. I was upset and I remember finally  finding the time to write and it turned into more of I’m over repeating the same shit with  each girl and choosing myself and just being like nahh you can’t have your cake and eat  it too. I don’t wanna be friends haha

Do you get inspired by other art forms?

I’m very inspired by films and painters. I watch a lot of documentaries and films on art.  My all time favorite painter is Jean-Michel Basquiat. I can find myself with the TV on and  music playing while writing music. I don’t know. It’s very weird but it works for me haha

Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?

Yes! My producer Colton Stocker always keeps certain words when I record haha. For  example every time I get a verse wrong or I mess up I’ll accidentally shout “fuck!” he’ll  keep it and put them all together in a verse and it’s sooo funny hearing them.

What’s your favorite place or environment to write?

I usually love writing outside at night or in my room at night. It’s when I’m most alone in  my thoughts.

What’s a record that shaped your creativity?

I can give you two records. Frank Ocean “Nostalgia Ultra” and Kid Cudi “Man on the  Moon 2” The best albums

Who is an artist or band you look up to today?

I truly look up to Kid Cudi a lot. Man when I tell you that man has gotten me through so  much and he’s still getting me through a lot. Him as a person is just amazing. I love him  a lot. He’s honestly so selfless and I can’t wait to work with him it’s gonna be something  to remember.

What excites you the most about what you do?

Listening to a song after it finally came together at the end! That feeling of listening to  something you just made and knowing it sounds so good! And also performing on stage.

What is your view on genres and music styles since you mix a lot of them in your  music?

I grew up with my parents playing 90s R&B and Rap and I found myself finding  Alternative, Pop Punk, Indie etc. I love when artists mix and you can’t define what they  do. Everyone wants to define you cause they need to. I just say enjoy and interpret it  how you feel. I’m a lot of genres not just one. People like Tyler, The Creator are fighting  for artists like myself.

What does music and art mean to you?

It means more to me than I can explain. I could write a book on music and art revolving  around my life. It’s one of the only ways I feel normal to be honest. I deal with anxiety a  lot and when I’m creating or even just viewing art I’m at peace and nothing bothers me.  It’s my only outlet that allows me to just be at peace with myself. Even when I’m upset

or mad I go to music and art and it brings me back. I love it

How would you describe your act in one word?

Compelling
