London-via-Paris singer-songwriter Cha:dy releases her highly-anticipated EP ‘Manifesto of Honesty’, out on all streaming platforms on 19 November. The EP features already released singles ‘Lazy’ (which has just hit 600k streams on Spotify), the intoxicating ballad ‘Suffocating’ and her latest single ‘Brother’ which premiered on COMPLEX.
To coincide with the release of her EP, Cha:dy also announces a London headline show on 18 November at The Battersea Barge.
Widely praised for her brave, open and honest songwriting and her ability to capture poignant moments through her storytelling, Cha:dy describes ‘Manifesto of Honesty’ as a ‘sort of music diary’. She says, “it’s all the things I needed to confess to myself and to everyone else, it’s the ugly honest raw truth. It’s a big shake of catchy melodies, two confessions, one big secret, a rap track and French and English lyrics combined.”
With her namesake taken from the Arabic word for ‘Melodious’, Cha:dy is a French singer and songwriter who narrates her story from the hood of Paris to the streets of London through her music. She writes ambitious and unapologetic songs about the ups and downs of life, often with darker, more introspective undertones.
What inspired this single?
I wanted to write a feel good, fun, light-hearted song but with my touch. It was winter and I was reminiscing about that time when the sunny days start to show up and the hook came very quickly.
What are some sources of inspiration for your storytelling?
I obviously find inspiration in my own experiences mostly in this EP because it is my ‘Manifesto of Honesty’, but also my family’s and friends’ experience as well. Some people really close to you have beautiful stories that will never be heard – so whenever I get the chance to tell their story with music, I take it.
Tell us about the music video for ‘Pink Lemonade’ and the idea behind it ?
We really tried to capture the essence of the song. It was in the summer and we were in Stockholm. We went on a night out with my friends, had drinks and danced… We did not need to act or anything. We were actually having a great time together and filmed the whole thing.
What’s a record that shaped your creativity?
EL MAL QUERER by Rosalia- the entire concept of telling a story from a book with an album, that includes chapter etc – the whole project really transports you to this universe. The production is very minimal but at the same time very rich, the visuals were absolutely stunning -it’s a beautifully executed album.
Who is an artist or band you look up to today?
Yseult is a French singer, she sings mainly in French but also in English and she’s fully independent so I’m very inspired by what she accomplished by herself.
She’s also an incredible artist, an unapologetic black woman, and a great songwriter; her songs touch me deeply.
Any future projects? More gigs and hopefully some festivals too and I’m already working on the next EP 🙂 which could end up being an album so very exciting!
Top 3 dream collaborations? Kendrick Lamar, Mark Ronson, Noname
What does music mean to you? Music is my home, it’s more than my passion, it’s what makes me want to get up in the morning.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
I would say that my music is a mix of alt- r&b and moody pop with caribbean flavours and neo-soul.
