In a world of genres and playlists, true originality is hard to come by. However, now and then an anomaly lands on planet earth and causes a ripple through the airwaves of the universe. Sean The Star Emperor is the embodiment of what happens when you take the status quo, do the complete opposite, then make a big song and dance about it, all the while destroying heteronormativity… Did we mention he is a monarch from another star system complete with magical powers?
What’s your story as an artist?
I am all about uninhibited fun. I am here to bring this message from my Galaxy to yours.
What do you want your music to communicate?
Freedom to be yourself beyond predetermined roles.
What are some sources of inspiration for your storytelling?
James Bond, 80s Flicks, Anime, Comics.
Who is an artist that you look up to more than others today?
I love Agnes from Sweden. Amazing look and sound.
What’s the record or artist that made you realize you wanted to be an artist?
I cannot really say for sure. This has always been my identity. However, Michael Jackson and Duran Duran were huge influences as I loved the way people screamed and went into a fervor over these artists. I wanted to be a part of that. Also their visual storytelling- connecting the music to ideas- SO amazing!
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
Witch Disco came to be because I’ve always been into the Old Ways. I have a background in spiritual healing and I wanted to combine that philosophy with the nightlife. Enter Witch Disco!
What inspires your sound?
New Age music really inspires my sound. I hear words and beats and see stories in the subtle nuances of a harp strumming. It’s so enchanting and imaginative to my mind.
What’s your favorite tune of yours?
“Witch Disco” hands down. It is me as a song: Mysterious, Sexy, Enchanting, Seductive, Rhythmic, and Ancient.
Where are some things you really want to accomplish as an artist?
I really want to flip the notion of whom is allowed to be attracted to whom. I want someone’s 89-year-old grandfather to find me sexy, and to make that feel perfectly okay.
Favorite lyric you ever wrote?
From ‘Sandstorm:’ “Like Dorothy in the sky, on her way from Oz, you know a bitch just looking for a home.”
Was there ever a moment when you felt like giving up?
-Today was the first time I felt like that. Honestly, I think it’s because it’s my birthday month and you get so reflective during this time. Also, the industry is such a roller coaster and with this whole uncertainty of times, it’s hard to have the same unwaveringly naive outlook for the future. It’s soooo taxing!!
What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
“You can’t protect a career you don’t have.” It is such great advice! It means until you are known for a certain thing , one shouldn’t guard or try to steer the career in an overbearing manner. Let the universe unfold things for you and you’ll be sure to be pleasantly surprised at your satisfaction. Oftentimes we think we know what’s best for ourselves. We are new and burgeoning, and think we know everything as to how the trajectory should go. And so we hinder our progress in the attempt to cultivate/map out on our terms.
Where do you think the next game changer will be in the music industry and entertainment scene?
I think the world of augmented reality and assuming an alternate identity through an avatar in a digital environment is the next step. I was doing a weekly DJ night this summer and at first it was so big due to everyone missing the nightlife but with Delta strain I saw nightlife numbers, everywhere, dwindle with each week. People are happy with doing things remotely. The cyber world gives one novelty but still security. I myself have a show with ‘Moshpit, ‘ they’re really taking this to the next level in terms of realism and innovation in this arena.
