Rapidly rising Australian punk rock stars Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have unveiled details of their forthcoming EP – Pretty Good For A Girl Band – due out May 13th via Domestic La La – and release searing new single “Girl Sports” (in honor of the male dentist that told bassist Jaida she should stick to “girl sports” after knocking her teeth out skating).
The new EP is Teen Jesus proclaiming they are a force to be reckoned with no matter their gender identity. For as much as there’s a collective sense of self-assuredness among the band, PGFAGB attests that their success has come in the face of being undeservedly underestimated.
What inspired this last release?
Girl sports was born by many similar experiences but the moment it was sparked was just after I walked down to my local shops. I was minding my damn business listening to some hits and some local loser slowed down his car and started yelling gross stuff at me. It obviously scared me but it made me more angry then ever because it bummed me out that he thought he had the right and the power just cause he was in his safe little car. Hence the lyrics “Do you feel so big and tough behind closed doors”.
I proceeded to yell back at him and said fuck off a couple times which did the trick:) I got home and got out ma diary and asked the rest of the girls to list some really shitty things people have said or done to them just because they are girls.
What’s the core message here?
Some core messages came up including catcalling obviously and not being taken seriously because of our gender as well as a bunch of sexist comments that just made me FUME.
It was the first song in a long time I sat down and wrote start to finish. We actually ended cutting out some lyrics because there was just too much to say haha.
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?
Recording was the most fun ever and we all felt super comfortable with our team which helped a lot with the process. We had a bunch of snacks and cruisers and created somethin super fun, upbeat and epic thanks to Alex lahey and Bonnie Knight the best producer/sound engineer duo EVA xoxo
Favorite track on the EP and why?
My favourite track of the EP is Bull Dragon because every time we play it its so cathartic and BEAUTIFUL thanks to our wonderful Jaida Xoxox
