‘Gaslight’ is produced by Simon Byrt (Jessie Ware) and draws on KemiAde’s 90s brit-pop influences, capturing the emotional chaos of being manipulated in a toxic relationship. The single sits within the realm of dreamy neo-soul, offering a plucky rolling bassline riff and loose R&B drums, accompanied by a hazy, entrancing synth and, of course, Kemi’s effortless, silky smooth vocals.
“I wanted to create a song that not only expresses that frustration but also shows that you can be the villain or the victim in this story”
“Gaslight is honesty inspired by a true story. I won’t go into too much detail but after that situation happened to me I was in therapy. Funnily, enough my therapist was the person who told me that this person had gaslit me. I think a week after that session, I had the session where I created gaslight. So it was a therapeutic experience for me, how it came to be. The whole entire purpose of this song for me, is for people to heal and be seen, the same way I did when I made it.”
