Raised in Southern California, singer/songwriter Cassy London embodies a dynamic mix of razor-sharp strength and resonating grace; delivering a distinctive melodic style and euphoric tone.
Cassy’s artist DNA combines her LA alt-rock roots with multiple genres across modern pop, resulting in a sound that is uniquely her own. Now the artist returns with fresh offering ‘New Age’, a bold, uplifting and unifying pop anthem.
“The message of ‘New Age’ has always been really important to me, especially right now. It’s about feeling powerful, not powerless in the face of change; holding onto optimism and rooting everything in love.”Cassy London shares
Produced by global multi-platinum producer Harry Sommerdahl (Red Velvet, Lil Wayne, Steve Aoki) the song was created during a writing trip to Stockholm, Sweden.
“The day of the session, I remember waking up and having a sense something really special was going to happen! I walked into the studio on a super cold day and sat down with the other writer and producer and began sharing my iPhone notes, voice memos, and the overall vision I had for a song called ‘New Age’” Cassy adds
Tell us about the genesis of your project. How did you get to where you are now?
Oh wow.. I could fill the page with this question! I’ve been singing since I was 4 years old and started really writing at about 11, music honestly chose me. I became obsessed with Phantom of the Opera and wanted so badly to be Sarah Brightman. This led to voice lessons and being involved in bands/theatre all throughout school. I thought I was going to focus on classical music, but I felt like my creativity was limited, and changed directions. I’m originally from Orange County, so I ended up finding local studios to sing at where I began to posting covers on YouTube when that was a cool thing to do. My first two covers “Stay” by Rihanna and “Love Song” by The Cure garnered attention, and I was asked to record my first solo record in LA. I self-released my first single “Carousel” which ended up trending on YouTube’s top videos, so I knew I needed to write more music. I got back in the studio and finished a whole EP which I was asked to perform with on the High School Nation Tour along with Kaya Stewart, Leroy Sanchez and Palaye Royale. The EP called Realm was very much inspired by many genres and experimental. After moving to LA permanently, I dedicated the time in understanding what the true artistry of developing your own sound is. My life really changed when I was invited to Stockholm, Sweden and spent 2 years on and off collaborating with some truly incredible songwriters and producers at The Kennel. That intense focus was what pushed me over the edge to create the sound I have today, in which my latest single New Age was created.
What should a song or piece of art communicate in your opinion?
In my opinion it should really make you FEEL and VISUALIZE something; whether that’s a happy memory, a sad one or maybe something that hasn’t happened yet that fuels your imagination.
Who were your top 3 artists last year?
Imagine Dragons, Chvrches, and Ed Sheeran
What do you do when you’re feeling uninspired?
I’m an only child so I enjoy being by myself, alone time is my most inspirational time. Good music and lighting do the trick!
What are your 2022 projects and goals?
Well one of my goals was to release more music, and that’s already coming true with my EP on the way. I definitely want to get on the road with it too and collaborate with other artists.
Favorite movie or TV show?
Splash (I love mermaids)
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
New Age is super special- I wrote it pre-pandemic and it was actually an idea/concept I had for awhile in my iPhone notes, but for some reason I never pursued it entirely until I felt like it was the right time. I was tired of people telling me that the real “good times” are behind us and how the world is so different now. It felt very negative, and I needed in my own life a kind of a “pump up” anthem to have hope and feel excited about our future, knowing we can make it however we want it. The song focuses on supporting one another, rooting everything in love and feeling powerful, not powerless in the face of change.
What is something you would want to change in the music and entertainment industry?
One thing I wish- there would be more control over ticket prices and distribution. It’s not always fair for one person to buy up 50 tickets and try to sell them making them essentially unaffordable, ruining it for fans. Shows are for everyone to enjoy.
Can you outline your creative process?
Each time varies but usually it starts with 2am iPhone notes, badly recorded voice memos, then bringing them to the producer, grab a guitar or sit at the piano, give examples of inspiration, lots of coffee and lay down a rough vocal on the first day no matter what so I don’t forget anything. Then I’ll sit on it for a few days and see what’s missing.
Who inspires your style and aesthetics?
I mean I do enjoy some good 60s Brigitte Bardot aesthetics mixed with a dark romance style. I mean who doesn’t love Helena Bonham Carter, she’s one of my favorites!
What is the achievement or moment in your career you are the most proud of and why?
I’m proud of taking the leap of faith and traveling to Europe to write on and off for 2 years, I wouldn’t be who I am today without that experience.
What do you think an artist should sing about nowadays?
Oh that’s a tough one, I hope most artists create from an authentic place within themselves and from that place sing about things that are close to their heart.
Do you have any regrets?
At this point in my life, no. I realize how important the mistakes I made were and what I learned from them is so valuable.
What is some piece of advice you would give to yourself right now?
Probably to trust your instincts more.
