The new offering from Hudson Thames juxtaposes the track’s sparkling, indie-pop groove with a horror-themed music video. Hailed for polishing his musical storytelling with a mix of pop elements and piano soul, “Weight” sees Hudson evolving as an artist and solidifying himself as a rising vocalist to watch. The single marks a fresh start for the multi-instrumentalist, who most recently opened Matchbox Twenty’s sold-out Minnesota show.
Regarding “Weight,” Thames shares, “This song has been the little engine that could. I was, for the first time as a young man, facing the choice of settling, or changing up my life and relationship, drastically and knew that music was the only way through. I also knew, immediately, the artist I wanted to help me crystalize my feelings; Kelsy Karter. With the help of our talented friends, John Gomez and William Carney, ‘Weight’ came together very quickly in the studio. To me, this song feels like two people screaming underwater. It represents the helplessness of watching something beautiful crumble before your eyes and the futility of it being nobody’s fault.”
“The music video ended up being one of my favorite things I have ever been a part of, creatively. Our director, Keene McRae is such a brilliant, mad scientist. When I came to him to direct the video.. I had wanted to take the direction really dark. He fought back saying he thought we could achieve a much more interesting piece by leaning more Ed Wood/Brian De Palma/Tim Burton with the tone. I think we landed on just the right balance of playful and creepy that allows the darkness go down smooth with just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek, camp.”
