Junior Varsity is a garage-punk Los Angeles trio consisting of Greg Aram, Zach Michel, and Brooke Danaher. They’ve carved out a solid niche and gained credibility through their underground shows and features in DIY grunge magazines. After a successful two-pack EP with Warner Records, they’re ready to close this chapter with “My Star,” completing their intended trilogy of EPs.
The band takes pride in its creative independence, viewing itself as the industry’s underdog. They focus on genuine fan connections, emphasizing slow, organic growth and building a loyal following one person at a time. This determination sets them apart from many acts today, as they strive to engage with fans on a more personal level, taking their time and enjoying every stage of the journey.
Across its six tracks, “My Star” delves into the life of an underdog in a big city, pinning dreams on hope and hard-earned grit. The record’s narrative unfolds over a year, exploring the ups and downs of new relationships. For instance, it opens with “Cross The Street,” a song that conveys a sense of urgency and longing while revealing shades of hesitation—doubts that make the other person feel both incredibly close and just out of reach. The following track, “New York,” captures an abstract version of the chaotic city and how it impacts perception and relationship dynamics.
The titular track, “My Star,” encapsulates the exhilarating rush of infatuation and the uncertainty that often accompanies it. From the start, our underdog hero expresses a longing that feels both hopeful and hesitant, admiring someone from afar. This sense of distance adds complexity, suggesting that love can be both enchanting and daunting, echoing themes from the first track.
“My Star” is sure to vibe with anyone who has navigated the thrilling yet uncertain waters of love. It celebrates connection and the magic of attraction while acknowledging the inherent risks of opening one’s heart. It tells a love story amid the struggle for a better tomorrow, set in a city that’s been both romanticized and criticized yet remains as enthralling as ever. Junior Varsity manages to bring it to life for us in unexpected new ways.
