The lines dividing modern electronic music are often drawn by what an artist listens to at home. For Russian-born producer KAI LONDON, dance music rarely makes it onto his personal playlists. Instead, the multi-instrumentalist builds his sound on an eclectic diet of N.E.R.D, Nirvana, and D’Angelo. That outsider perspective gives his new track, “FRED ON MUSHROOMS AGAIN,” its distinctive edge.

The inspiration sparked when KAI’s partner pointed out how serious Fred Again looks in his videos, triggering a creative experiment. According to him, “I wondered what Fred would sound like as a child. The amazing thing about Fred is his mastery of both club music and emotional, high-IQ compositions. I challenged myself to do the same. Take the listeners on a magical journey and make them dance.”

Instead of relying on stock synthesizer patches, KAI LONDON built “FRED ON MUSHROOMS AGAIN” around a highly manipulated flute recording. He twisted the raw woodwind into a pitched, alien-like vocal hook that anchors the main drop. This organic foundation allows the song to evolve with a real narrative arc, trading predictable club repetition for a clever balance of high-energy grooves and surprising tenderness.

Day-one followers will remember him from his early days producing under the moniker Luca Koala, a name he retired to step forward under his legal name. After cutting his teeth running DIY warehouse dance parties in New York’s Lower East Side, a sudden lease termination pushed him across the Atlantic to London.

He honed his skills while clocking remix duties for non-EDM innovators like Rich Brian, Paula Cendejas, and LIA LIA. Now, KAI LONDON operates smoothly with enough notches on his belt to cook up a debut album that is soon to drop, and the more dreamy, hope-filled sound of this new track heralds said upcoming album, which he’s titled “Little Prince,” inspired by the classic Saint-Exupéry novella.

None of this comes out of the blue, as KAI is set on challenging the traditional habits and expectations of electronic music culture. Instead of crafting thumping music for dark, exhausted rooms at 3:00 AM, KAI LONDON is scoring for a healthier, daylight culture, actively decoupling electronic music from images of sweaty warehouse walls to feature open-air and natural landscapes. This track and the upcoming album provide a blueprint for that exact transition, with driving textures that feel entirely at home in the daylight and more internalized, holistic listening experiences.
