Tell us about your story as an artist

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be in a band on a big stage in front of people. Throughout school I was always playing music, starting bands and writing songs. After high school, I decided to start a band that I could really start to take things seriously with, and that was Eliza & the Delusionals. I had no idea what I was doing at the start – and I still don’t sometimes – but it’s been the most insane journey so far and I feel very lucky to be in the position I am today with the band.

What do you think is the most important aspect of your life right now?

I guess it always has been writing songs. Especially since we’ve spent so much time at home without touring and live music, there hasn’t been much else to do but immerse ourselves in songwriting. Kurt and I have spent the most part of the last two and a half years writing at our home studio.

What makes this song special in your opinion?

To me, it has so many special highlights. It was written whilst we were in LA at the start of 2020 between tours, which was so exciting at the time. We had a co-writing session with Sarah Aarons and John Hill in which the song flourished from, and I don’t know if we even knew it yet but it was the beginning of creating our debut album “Now And Then”. That song really was the seed of a lot of ideas that grew into the album. I’m really proud of the music video as well, it’s one of my favourites to date.

What inspired this track?

When we met up with Sarah Aarons for the first time and we were chatting, the three of us (Kurt, Sarah and I) had coincidentally a lot of similarities at the beginning of our careers with people taking advantage of our naivety, and that’s really where the idea for the song came from – you can’t give someone everything, you have to keep some for yourself.

Shortly after the initial writing session where the song was originally demoed and written, we had to come back to Australia due to COVID. It was a really bitter bill to swallow coming back and having to let go of so many dream opportunities that we were set to have that year. So when we had settled back in at home, we started working on the song and really felt like we wanted to play into 90s/Y2K nostalgia sonically. When we took it into the studio, our producer Kon Kersting really helped bring that theme to life in the production.

What are some of the core messages here?

Going back to what I was saying about the inspiration behind the track, sometimes you experience people that will take advantage of you because you’re unsure or naïve – whether it be in your career, personal life, relationship, anything really – and you find yourself doing everything to please them because you think that’s what’s right. But at some point it has to give, and you make the realisation that you can’t give everything to them, and you do have to keep something for yourself.

How do you think tik tok and social media are contributing to change an artist’s career?

I think TikTok especially is such an interesting thing for artists and musicians at the moment. As we’ve all seen it can truly break and artist or song into next-level popularity, which is really cool. I think the difficult thing is that there is often an expectation for musicians to also become ‘internet content creators’, which is also cool but also can be a difficult thing to settle in to and feel comfortable with. I personally am a fan of TikTok, and I love watching them all of the time.  I’m hoping to focus more on creating content for our page this year too.

What excites you about your life?

I’m really excited about our album coming out this year, and finally being able to tour. Live shows and touring make up such a large part of our lives, so I think all of us are feeling excited that we have a debut album to play for everyone and that we get to do it across Australia and the US!

What are some of your core values as a human being?

For me personally, I guess kindness is a big one. You never know what other people are going through behind the surface, so always being kind to people is important.

What are your projects for this year?

We’ve just released our latest single “Give You Everything”, which is a track from our debut album “Now And Then” coming out on May 20th 2022, so that’s pretty huge for us. We’ve spent the last few years working on it so we’re really excited for it to be released. We’ve also got some touring and festivals planned for Australia and the USA very soon!
