On Conversations, Budjerah reveals a darker, sleeker sound, reflective of the changes that have occurred in his life, “These songs speak about the last year – about me figuring out what’s important,” he says. The six-track EP features previously released singles “Talk” with MAY-A, and “Wash My Sorrows Away.”
Later this spring, Budjerah will be taking the stage in Australia, UK and US on tour. See dates here.
At the young age of 20, there’s always been something wise-beyond-his-years. The Aboriginal musician’s vocals display an aptitude for the sheen and indelibility of old-school soul singers, a quality that speaks to the classic records (Sam Cooke, The Clark Sisters) Budjerah was raised on growing up in coastal New South Wales.
What inspired this last release?
The Conversations EP was inspired by this last year. I put out my first EP, Budjerah, last year and life has been a bit of a whirlwind since then. A lot of changes happened and I’m lucky I had people to talk to about what was going on. The conversations that were had turned into the music.
What is something you can’t live without?
I can’t live without singing. I sing everyday, not just on stage or in the shower, I sing 24/7. I can’t help myself. It could be an unhealthy obsession, but it’s my job now so I guess it’s justified!
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?
“This is the interlude” was a joke, and wasn’t intended to be the interlude at all. Matt Corby started playing this beat and I started freestyling as a joke and everyone really liked it so we put it on the EP.
What’s your favorite thing to do besides music?
I love taking pictures. I have a cool Polaroid camera and a film camera that I take everywhere with me. I don’t really use my phone that much, so taking physical pictures helps me keep track of what’s been happening and all the cool things in life.
What’s a record or artist that shaped your creativity?
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. I grew up listening to this album and I think it had the biggest impact on me and how I make music.
Who is an artist or band you look up to today?
I really look up to Beyonce. She is one of the best performers and vocalists in the world. My dream is to tour the world and put on incredible shows and Beyonce is the benchmark for me.
What excites you the most about what you do?
The best thing for me is performing. I love seeing people coming together and having a good time. If I can connect with everyone at a show, the energy fills me up and just makes me happy.
