Whether jamming together on their family farm in the Adelaide Hills, playing alongside Arcade Fire at the Isle of Wight festival, or opening shows for Little Mix & Ronan Keating, Germein’s energetic and charismatic live performances have been described as nothing short of mesmerising. Fresh off the back of their show stopping performance at Isle Of Wight Festival where they have now played for the 5th time, the band’s next UK festival appearance will be at Cornbury festival on Saturday 9th July. They will also be performing at The Half Moon in London on 22 June supporting James Walsh from StarSailor.

The band say, “We are over the moon to be back in the UK! It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone & we’ve really missed being able to perform for our amazing UK audiences – so we absolutely can’t wait to finally share our new songs with everyone this summer!”

Tell us about the genesis of your new single ‘Good For A Girl’.

We were scheduled to kick off our UK Europe Tour in 2020, but like many touring artists, we became grounded once Covid hit. As a result we refocused much of our time and energy into crafting new music at our family home amidst lockdown, and so ‘Good For A Girl’ was born. We wanted to write a song that would help tackle some of the stereotypes we’ve faced being women in the music industry. For example, Clara went into a music shop to buy drumsticks, and the guy behind the desk asked her if she was buying them for her boyfriend. I (Georgia) remember our first soundcheck on a national tour when it was as if we’d surprised the sound guy when we started playing, like he expected us to be bad. At the end of the show he said to us that we were actually pretty good for girls. We wanted this song to give a voice to anyone who might be going through a similar experience in whatever industry they might be in. It’s about giving girls an equal playing field, and not discriminating based on gender.

How did you get to where you are now?

We grew up jamming together on our family farm in Adelaide, South Australia – raised on Dad’s records of B.B. King, Van Morrison, & Cat Stevens. Dad played trumpet in a New Orleans rhythm & blues band, which sparked our love for loud, feel good music we could dance to – and Mum often led singing around the piano. We started out busking on the main street of our local town with our younger brother, and eventually started playing local venues as a trio. As our live show developed we started touring nationally & internationally, gradually building our fan base and playing bigger venues.

What should a song or piece of art communicate in your opinion?

We love how songs are able to connect with others on such a deep level, whether that’s telling a story, sharing an important message, or taking someone back to a particular moment in time. For us, the way a song can make you feel is a big one – and the more we write from our personal experiences, the more we find we are able to connect with our listeners.

Who were your top 3 artists last year?

Clara – Simon & Garfunkel, Ed Sheeran, The McClymonts

Ella – Leon, Wild Rivers, Ten Fe

Georgia – John Mayer, Vance Joy, Foy Vance

What do you do when you’re feeling uninspired?

Mixing things up is always a great way to spark creativity – whether that’s going for a walk, making a trip to the beach, or just getting out of the studio. We especially love going and seeing other bands play, or even just watching old band documentaries and getting inspired from other artists’ journeys.

What are your 2022 projects and goals?

We are so excited to have finally arrived in the UK to play our brand new songs for you all this summer. After this tour we’ll head back to Oz and finish recording new music which we can’t wait to share with you all soon. Our team is currently planning our 2023 tours so stay tuned for when we’ll be back!

What is something you would want to change in the music and entertainment industry?

The world of social media is an amazing tool in allowing artists to connect with their fans from all over the world, however the constant pressure for new & updated content can become overwhelming and exhausting for many artists. For us, first and foremost we just want to make great music, and so we are finding we have to intentionally make this a priority over socials.

Can you outline your creative process?

I (Georgia) am naturally more drawn to reflect inwardly on my thoughts and feelings, and song-writing has always been a positive way for me to express how I’m feeling by getting those emotions out of me & onto paper and into music. It’s always been a very freeing experience. Usually lyrics come first, and then the music just happens instinctively.

Who inspires your style and aesthetics?

We like to wear what feels comfortable to our individual style, which is quite different from each other. It has certainly changed a lot over the years, but these days you’ll most likely see Clara rocking jeans and a singlet, Ella in high boots & sparkly shorts, and Georgia in overalls with the iconic black hat.

What is the achievement or moment in your career you are the most proud of and why?

Opening for Little Mix was pretty surreal for all of us. We had played some big shows before, but opening their stadium tour was next level for us. There were so many ‘pinch me’ moments every day, but one of our favourite things was getting to play for all of the Little Mix fans, who were so warm, sweet and kind to us. It was also special having our Mum join us on the tour as well.

Do you have any regrets?

Only a few cringeworthy band outfit combos from the early days haha.

What is some piece of advice you would give to yourself right now?

Embrace & enjoy the journey.
