MasonRoseGray is a singer/songwriter based in Florida. Creating music with the sole intention of shining light into the dark and exposing the truth, her sound blends indie, folk and blues with honest and raw lyrics, unlocking a whole new world; the good, the bad, the ugly. Inspired by the likes of Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish and David Bowie, Gray evokes a unique and infectious sound which encourages self-love and ultimately provides the key to happiness.
Her start in life wasn’t easy. Growing up in poverty, her dreams were put on the backburner, while her family struggled to find money for food and clothes. Her father was controlling and abusive, leaving her feeling powerless. She confides, “Eager to escape that life I put my focus, drive and ambition into pursuing a career that would sustain me financially. I got my bachelors degree in nursing before the age of 21.
I vowed to never go back. Although, never fully processing my childhood, the fear of abandonment led me into a long term relationship.” Soon beginning to feel controlled by her girlfriend, Gray felt desperate to escape the housewife trap and reconnect with her true authentic self.
Tell us about the genesis of your project. How did you get to where you are now?
I started writing lyrics when I was younger and would sing when no one was home. It wasn’t until I went through a breakup and major self transformation in my 20’s, that I revisited writing and music. Since then lyrics have been pouring out of me. I write a song a day with my guitar and I, most of the time just freestyling to keep the creativity alive. Lyrics and melodies pop into my head while driving, thank god for voice memos.
How would you describe the highs and lows of being an artist?
Similar to being at a casino (although I definitely don’t gamble), it’s very risky but the adrenaline rush is absolutely worth it. The highs are a beautiful feeling and that’s what ultimately keeps me going. I feel out of my body when I sing and dance, yet so present and connected.
There are definitely lows; creative and writer blocks. When something just doesn’t flow. You work on a song or project for hours only to feel stuck and drained at the end. Although, most of the time revisiting it later brings more clarity and insight.
What’s a musical guilty pleasure of yours?
To find murals around my city (St. Petersburg) and freestyle in front of them, then later find a track that fits the dance. I also love listening to records. I play them while I clean around the house and cook.
What are some sources of inspiration for you?
Oh my goodness, everything! Let’s see, definitely nature; sunsets, clouds, flowers, trees and the ocean. I’ve learned so much about myself and the world from hiking and exploring nature. I find inspiration in everyday conversations, podcasts, movies, and my environment.
Who is an artist that you look up to more than others today?
Definitely Sam Smith. He opened up my heart with his lyrics and voice. I remember going to one of his concerts and balling my eyes out. His voice struck my whole body. I strive to have that kind of impact on others.
Favorite activity to blow off some steam?
Yoga and deep breathing. Whenever I’m upset I always bring my attention back to my breath and instantly feel a form of relief.
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
SURVIVE was my 1st single and release. I was scared shitless but it ended up being an incredible feeling! I had tremendous support and gained tons of positive feedback. My main goal was to touch people’s hearts and showcase that we can survive through anything, especially heartbreak.
What are some things you do to deal with anxiety and creative blocks?
Taking long walks and focusing my attention elsewhere to ease my mind. I find it’s important to come back to a project if it isn’t working.
What’s the future looking like for you?
Oh man, that’s a loaded question. I’m currently working on an album called OMNIPRESENCE. My dream is to tour and be on the big stage! Although, I know it’s a process and I’m enjoying every moment of it and soaking it all in.
What inspires your visuals, videos, looks etc?
Again, I’d have to say nature. I see the craziest most beautiful images in nature. It’s romantic and nostalgic. I find the stranger a look whether it be visuals, videos or clothing always get the most attention and make me feel the most attractive. I like going against the grain and trying different things. Individuality is most important to me. I appreciate the androgenous style and incorporate it in my look.
What is the most embarrassing memory and most proud moment of your career so far?
Most embarrassing memory… when I started seeking out other peoples advice on my music and going against myself to get their approval, putting me in a creative funk. I was embarrassed that I let their opinions affect me, my music and process.
Most proud moment is releasing my first single SURVIVE and getting it on EarMilk!
What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
To make music you like first and foremost. To enjoy the process, not the product.
Where do you think the music and entertainment industry is headed after this past year?
My hope is only up. I’m so excited to see what the future has in hold for me and I’m ready to take this adventure. I currently have 5 songs produced and plan to release one each month. My next single is *perfect design* TBA, stay tuned!
