Mikalyn’s ascent in the music business has been, in some respects, an atypical journey thus far. She gained an initial unconventional foothold when a Brazilian record label discovered her original, piano-driven music on Soundcloud and offered to transform them into EDM hits. What followed were monster collaborations with the likes of Zuffo, Diskover, Ownboss, and Evokings.
These collaborations, although not the direction she expected to take at the beginning of her career, were crucial stepping stones in building her repertoire and fanbase, ultimately introducing new listeners to her original alt-pop stylings. The Canadian songwriter pens relatable songs which touch on relationships, love (or lack thereof) and everyday experiences and emotions. Inspired by the likes of BETWEEN FRIENDS, Tears for Fears, Billie Eilish and Marina, Mikalyn’s sound is a vibrant and colourful blend of infectious pop melodies, soaring vocals and polished production.
Her latest release “Ready to Love You” was written about needing to backtrack on a relationship. It’s about realizing that you’re in too deep and explaining to your partner that you’re not ready to fall in love yet. Mikalyn confides, “The idea of love is scary and overwhelming sometimes and this song is about trying to avoid it where possible.” Produced and co-written with Murray Daigle, “Ready to Love You” is built upon an 80s inspired beat. Echoing vocals, oscillating synths and a groove-laden bass provide the foundations for this shimmering, catchy tune, while Mikalyn’s soulful vocal tone oozes with an honesty, as she sings, “I’m all doubts, you’re holding out, but I don’t feel it, I’m okay, but you’re in pain, ya I think you need this.”
With millions of streams for her music to date, Mikalyn has had her songs placed on numerous Spotify editorial playlists, including Canada’s New Music Friday, Indie Pop, Fresh Finds and EQUAL. She has also received airplay on CBC radio, as well as reaching the finals in their searchlight competition multiple years in a row. With a one-of-a-kind style and unwavering drive, Mikalyn shows no signs of slowing down on her already impressive trajectory as she launches her indie pop career.
Tell us about the genesis of your project. How did you get to where you are now?
My artist project started a while ago now – I would say around 12 or 13. I started out by joining songwriting groups, like Songwriters Association of Canada, and learning what I could about the craft, getting advice and co-writing. From there I started performing live, and really focused on finding a sound. I’ve been releasing music for a while now, and toplining quite a bit lately for EDM songs around the world! More recently I’ve been putting out indie-pop music, which I’m super excited about. I feel like I’ve found the sound and style that truly resonates with me, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me!
What should a song or piece of art communicate in your opinion?
I think it depends on the art piece! For me, the biggest thing I want to communicate with my songs is whatever emotion I’m feeling when writing it in the best way possible. Sometimes that’s through metaphors, or symbolism, and it’s up to the listener to unpack it or take it in their own way. Other times it can be pretty explicit in the meanings!
Who were your top 3 artists last year?
I share my Spotify with my sisters so my Spotify Wrapped gets a little warped every year. My top 3 were Coldplay, Billie Eilish, and One Direction which is 100% my sisters, so I think the true #3 is Tame Impala.
What do you do when you’re feeling uninspired?
Whenever I’m feeling uninspired, I have a bit of a routine that I’ll do. I’ll clean my room as a way to help clear my mind, listen to music (I have a playlist called “Hmmm” specifically for that kind of mood – it’s a mix of sad songs, hype songs, there’s even some classical music on there!), and I’ll just sit with my guitar or piano after and play around without forcing anything – I’ll just practice. I have a piano song that I save for learning in my off time, and I’ve been picking away at that for a while!
Another thing I like to do is make lists, just so that I can visualize things that I need to do or get done in the week. Having an end goal, and being able to physically check things off is helpful for me.
What are your 2022 projects and goals?
I’ve been working on my EP for a while, and 2022 is finally the year to release it! It’s been in the works for the last 2 years and I’m so excited to finally put it out. A lot of my goals this year centre around that, and performing live. Now that Covid-19 restrictions are lifting, I’m excited to start gigging again, and want to put on a few special events with a full band.
Favorite movie or TV show?
I would say that my favourite TV shows are the Office and Normal People, and my favourite movie is Stand By Me.
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about
My latest single, Ready to Love You, was written last summer. I had been going to the studio weekly with my friend/co-writer/producer, Murray. I always love 80s influenced tracks, and so we wanted to work on a track with some 80s elements. The idea of the song came quickly after the track – being in an in-between place, where you’re not ready to commit to being in a relationship with someone. It can be scary, and I think it’s something a lot of people have experienced. It was super fun to track the vocals.
What is something you would want to change in the music and entertainment industry?
That’s a good question – there are a lot of great things about the music industry, but in every industry there are things that could work in a better way. I would love to see a change in the streaming royalties system – especially for songwriters. There are so many amazing artists out there that work so hard, but still struggle to make ends meet. Depending on who you talk too some say things have never been worse and others say things have never been better. I am an optimist.
Can you outline your creative process?
My creative process usually starts with me sitting down at the piano, and figuring out a melody. I’m a very melody driven writer, so whether I’m in a co write or writing on my own, that usually comes first. Then, I’ll usually come up with a word or phrase, and build around that. It’s a lot of trial and error, and most songs have a few drafts, but I always am happy with the end result when I know I’ve tried out a few options and picked my favourite. I love coming up with creative or surprising lyrics.
