Hanne Mjøen is a Norwegian alt/pop artist who creates music that makes you want to dance, with lyrics that make you want to cry. Her intoxicating sound is coated in a dark, raw edge, providing a comforting reminder that it’s ok to be flawed, while her lyrics pull the trigger for an outlet of pent-up emotions.

Navigating love and life, her upcoming EP Emotional Fever is an emporium of talent. Written between Stockholm and London, Mjøen brings together the best of dance-worthy pop melodies, and moments of heartache, to tell her chapters of journeying into adult life.

Her latest single “Hell with You” narrates what it feels like to fall out of love but not wanting to leave for the fear of never falling in love again. Rich in electro, dream-pop melodies with flares of throbbing synths and a rich mix of dynamics the track takes you on a rollercoaster of sound and emotion.

“I wrote Hell With You in March 2019 with Karl Zine. At the time I recently walked out of a relationship, and I wanted to write about what it was like falling out of love while still being in the relationship, and wanted to describe my inner dialogue in this period of my life.

I haven’t really heard a lot of songs about that phaze before, at least not that honest and straightforward as we wrote the lyrics, so it felt like there was a song that might be needed, and might mean something for someone.

“Heaven is for girls who play nice” was something I’ve had in my notes for a while, and with Karl and the state of mind I was in  at the time, it finally felt right to pursue this idea.”

With lyrics like, “I don’t mind being broken, if it takes me to heaven,” the songwriter gives us a glimpse into how she turns her pain into power. The overall feel of the five-track EP is rich in electro, dream-pop melodies with flares of throbbing synths and a rich mix of dynamics that take you on a rollercoaster of sound and emotion.

I definitely get inspired by all forms of art, even if I’m not aware of it. I think we all get influenced by it in some ways. I do not often sit down to read a book, but I very often draw inspiration from poems, and short stories.

I write down lines from movies, series commercials, conversations with friends, conversations between other people that I eastrop on, graffiti, art, nature, but mostly I get inspired by my own feelings. It usually comes from an experience, and it usually is a sad one.”

Emotional Fever is an outlet for Mjøen’s feelings and the realisation that adulthood isn’t how it seems through rose-tinted glasses.

Mjøen’s 2018 release “Sounds Good To Me” has garnered over 14 million streams to date, receiving airplay from Annie Mac and BBC Radio 1. Connecting with listeners across the globe through her honest songwriting and vibrant pop anthems, Hanne Mjøen is a force to be reckoned with.

“I feel like the song came out of nowhere, and it was the song where I found myself and dared to be me. All of a sudden it had millions of streams, and people recognised me for it, which felt absurd and good. It gave me a lot of confidence as both a songwriter and an artist, that the song I felt was special turned out to be it too.”
