Following her packed-out performance at Monstercat Compound last month, bass house queen Nostalgix makes her highly anticipated debut on the label and is joining forces with hip-hop/sugar trap rapper and songwriter Rico Nasty for “WAR” – out on September 29 on Monstercat.

Known for her girly punk, dubbed Sugar Trap, Rico Nasty has been disrupting the hip-hop space with the same vengeance as Nostalgix in the dance world – shattering glass ceilings and leaving the shards of the patriarchy behind them.

Tell us about this track WAR, and what inspired it?

All my life I’ve been told that I can’t do it. It’s not possible. I was born in a part of the world where I could never pursue my dreams of being an artist. Even having that be my dream would be crazy. Throughout my life, I’ve had to constantly break boundaries that people have set on me to become the best version of myself and to achieve my dreams. When I was making ‘WAR’ I wanted to make a record that embodied the energy of “YES, you CAN do whatever you want.” You CAN take over the world, and you will. I mean why wouldn’t you? You can do anything you set your mind to.

How was working with Rico Nasty? Any lessons learned?

One thing I love about Rico Nasty is how she is so authentic to herself. I love artists that stay true to who they are and feel free to express themselves in their own way.

I think Rico is so unique as an artist, so I was stoked to work with her on ‘WAR’. Her energy is just so infectious!

What are some of the main themes you wanted to explore here and why do you say this track marks an evolution for your act. What do you mean?

For me ‘WAR’ is the beginning of a new era of Nostalgix. It’s the evolution of my sound as an artist and the evolution of me as a person.

I’ve spent the last 5 years perfecting my sound and with ‘WAR’ you can really hear my growth as an artist. You can hear the evolution in my production, writing, and rapping.

Working on this record has been a really amazing experience for me. I’ve always wanted to branch out and merge the worlds of Hip Hop, Pop, and EDM. I love being able to work with artists outside of the dance music space. Besides the production of the record, I’ve gotten to tap into my film production background and have poured a lot of time and energy into the visual aspects of the release as well. I’ve really gotten to tie everything I love into one project.

What can we expect from this new trajectory you’re taking?

The evolution of Nostalgix. I’m working on the best music of my life, new shows, new visuals, new everything. I’ve been pouring in a loooot of time in the studio.

It’s a very exciting time for me as an artist. I’ve been working nonstop to bring all my visions to life, and I can’t wait to share it all.
