Born and raised in the Austrian mountains, Lea G first fell in love with music aged 6 singing in her school choir. Now based in London, Lea made the move to pursue music full time, where she attended a course in Songwriting and A&R at the Notting Hill Academy of Music. Lea’s songs are best characterised by their bold, yet relatable messages conveyed through catchy hooks and nostalgic melodies with influences ranging from Ed Sheeran and Sigrid to Florence and The Machine. Her fresh pop energy collides with her acoustic style and angelic, effortless vocals, emitting a comfortable and familiar aura.

Lea’s upcoming EP, YOU(TH), showcases intimate songwriting, giving us a raw glimpse into her life and emotions. From twists and turns of pop-influenced production from producer BROOKFIELD, the EP is doused in classic analogue instrumentation from warm glowing guitars, bright drums, steady bass lines and touches of singer-songwriter acoustic moments adding to the authenticity of the music. Embellished with pops of subtle electro moments from echoing melodies and gentle pulsing synths, each song leaves a lasting imprint. The songwriter shares, “YOU(TH) is what it feels/felt like for me to be young and to have those first experiences of love and what it means to be coming of age.”

The five-track EP includes “MISSING OUT”. A track which narrates the hardships of having to work to provide security whilst living in London. She shares, “I was missing out on the things I should be doing in my youth – going to parties, having fun and meeting new people instead of following my dream and working really hard on my music”.

Her new record “CRAZY” kicks in with a paced electric guitar, soft clicks and resolving synth lines, sounding very Sigrid-esque and energised, mixed in with flushes of acoustic magic. The single is catchy and charming with unexpected high notes and memorable lyrics and about falling in love by going on adventures together.

What’s your story as an artist?

I grew up in Austria and started off by singing in my school choir, then played the violin before getting into playing guitar. I never really set out to be an artist, I always just wanted to sing and later tell my stories in the shapes of songs. I got into songwriting by discovering Ed Sheeran and thought, that if he can play guitar and write his own songs on his own, surely I should be able to do that, too. So I started writing my own songs and performing them to friends. When I was 16, I went on a 10 month exchange year in the south of the UK and did a BTEC in music performance, which got me into being on stage. When I returned to Austria, I started busking all around Europe, playing small shows in pubs in my city and started releasing music. After having completed my A Levels in Austria, it was clear to me that I had to go back to the UK to do music. I found a course in Songwriting and Musikbusiness at the Notting Hill Academy of Music and moved to London in late August 2019. That was when I started working on my debut EP YOU(TH) which was released on the 12th of November 2021. The rest is history

What inspired this last release?

All songs on YOU(TH) are based around the things I felt about 3 years ago when I wrote them. I wanted the songs to resonate with other people my age, so I really tried to capture the more general feelings of people around me, like trying to find yourself and what you want to do with your life, confusion and wondering about the future as well as falling in love for the first time. MIDYOUTH CRISIS very much plays into that feeling of uncertainty about your future and trying to stay young and free, when everyone expects you to be an adult. MISSING OUT was the last song I wrote for the EP, just after I moved to London in 2019. It’s about how I just sometimes feel like I´m missing out on stuff people my age do, who have normal jobs or go to University, instead of choosing the road of pursuing my passion on my own. CRAZY is my favourite song on the EP and it’s about falling in love by going on adventures with that person you really like and kind of connects to the last song on the EP – PERSPECTIVE, which is a love song I feel like came from a very „old and wise“ part of my soul. Lots of people who meet me for the first time say that they feel I am an old soul, so having that song on there, written from that perspective just felt right.

Do you get inspired by other art forms?

I get inspired by life. Every conversation, feeling or piece of art can inspire. I am a big fan of all genres of music, theatre and art in general. I also love reading and watching movies, so sometimes I write songs based on those.

Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?

Most of the songs on the EP were partly recorded during lockdown over zoom which was super fun. Because I am super good friends with BROOKFIELD who produced the record, we always had a giggle making it.I just recently released a series of BTS videos talking about how we made the EP which includes some hilarious videos of us recording instruments in weird ways and enjoying amazing food.

What’s your favorite place or environment to write?

It really depends on the day. I think most songs I write somehow start developing in my phone´s note section and then later in my bedroom on guitar. Then I usually take that idea to the people I love writing with and finish it off. I love my bedroom because It’s got a little studio setup in it and always feels cozy and safe. I also love writing in other spaces though, it depends a lot on who I am working with, and if I feel safe with them.

What’s a record that shaped your creativity?

Definitely + by Ed Sheeran. I wouldn’t have started writing my own songs if I hadn’t found that record. Before I wrote songs, I wrote short stories. That record inspired me to tell my stories in the shape of songs.

Who is an artist or band you look up to today?

Being the big feminist I am, I really have to mention all the amazing, super talented young female artists in my circle who I look up to like Baby Queen, Holly Humberstone, Greta Isaac and Orla Gartland.

What excites you the most about what you do?

I love writing songs to explore how I am feeling, it´s like therapy for me. Then being able to collaborate with my friends on making those records and afterwards performing them live is so satisfying and exciting. But the reason why I write songs is to connect to others through it.

Nothing excites me more than hearing someone relate to one of my songs.

What is your view on genres and music styles since you mix a lot of them in your music?

I think we live in a very interesting time for genres in music. It’s super exciting to see new artists and bands mix genres and reimagine classic ones. I am very excited about my next project which I´ll release in 2022. It will be the most honest and vulnerable record I have ever made and the creative direction will be the natural step up from the last record.

What does music and art mean to you?

One word. Everything. Life wouldn’t be worth living without it.

How would you describe your act in one word?

I think it will have to be honest.
