Los Angeles based singer-songwriter Gabriella Marinaro has announced her debut EP INNER SPACE with lead single “Goodnight Moon”. The track is about letting that person know that it’s over – only to be pulled back in.

This song reflects the triumphant feeling of freeing yourself from toxicity and regaining your individualism and freedom. When you let that person know you are no longer happy and that you know it’s over, you take back your power.

Her upcoming EP INNER SPACE – produced by Stefan Skarbek (former Amy Winehouse producer) and mixed and mastered by Grammy nominated engineers David Kim and James Krausse  – reflects the many shades of the artist’s struggle returning to Los Angeles after living in Rome, her battle with mental health and how that was reflected in her relationships.

“While I tried to collaborate and make sense of my music, it was creatively disheartening when the priority for the producers was trying to make a ‘hit’.  I am a bit all over the place and this EP is a way to make sense of myself and to close a memorable chapter of my life that I think a lot of people can relate to. Your mind and thoughts are your own and you are living in your INNER SPACE.”  -Gabriella Marinaro

What inspired this last release?

The INNER SPACE EP has been long in the making. I was inspired by the not-so-extraordinary LA and my love/hate relationship with my city and the people.  It is a reflection of the many shades of my struggles returning to Los Angeles after living in Rome, my battle with mental health and how that was/is reflective in my relationships. Your mind and thoughts are your own and you are living in your INNER SPACE.

Do you get inspired by other art forms?

Absolutely. If i’m in a creative rut almost nothing will inspire me, but when I am feeling confident creatively & inspired, a crushed bottle cap or roadkill can be a beautiful thing or a hook to a new song. I feel my sound is very visual and I often create graphics and collages from clippings and creatures that I draw when I can’t write. The world’s inspiring and disheartening and I truly believe every art form connects. As an artist you can trust and appreciate other people’s art, whatever that expression might be.

Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?

When I first moved back to LA every producer and session was trap. I am an avid trap listener and for a moment I wanted so badly to make trap my genre. Most all of these songs were written over trap beats in late night studio sessions with rappers. Finding your voice as a vocalist in a trap beat is a whole new way of writing, I am now back to writing with instruments and my music, although in the same vein, has expanded in many ways.

What’s your favorite place or environment to write?

Privacy is very important when I am writing for myself. I get a little crazy, because I am so passionate, that when an idea hits me I don’t think I would want anyone to see me in the chaotic state of trying to record/write my full thought before it leaves my very full brain. I love writing and collaborating with people and playing off of each other’s words and sharing personal experiences or creating the story.

What’s a record that shaped your creativity?

Many that I can’t choose one because it would feel like I was cheating on the others  – but currently – Evangeline by Emmylou Harris.

She is a 14 time Grammy winner, but I think she is absolutely underrated.

Who is an artist or band you look up to today?

I always throw it back to oldies and get so stuck. At the end of my time in Rome, and when I first moved back to LA, it was all Erykah Badu for me non-stop. I have seen her live three times now and counting. I have recently been diving into Caroline Polachek. Her visuals and music inspire me. Not only is she super talented, she has a gift in creating TRULY eccentric pop music.

What excites you the most about what you do ?
Fitting the pieces of a puzzle together to make a song that you yourself can’t stop listening to.  I am excited to have finally released Goodnight Moon and I can’t wait for my debut EP INNER SPACE to come out. I am thrilled to share myself with the world and to have a voice and a growing platform to do so. I was given the gift of music and it’s the biggest blessing and, of course, being hyper-creative is sometimes a curse but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
