Hailing from the Lone Star state of Texas, born and raised in Houston, Coline Creuzot, a singer/songwriter has an astonishing voice. Coline fell in love with the arts at a young age and always knew she was destined for greatness. If it isn’t her dynamic personality or her creative drive, Coline’s angelic voice and her passion for music is captivating. Coline started
off performing at local competitions and continued to write and sing throughout her high school and college career. Coline is not only an incredible voice, but also a scholar.
After the singer/songwriter turned boss woman completed her undergraduate degree in Business Management at Hampton University, she decided to move back to Houston to pursue music full time. During this time and while experiencing the growing pains of life, detailed in many of her autobiographical songs, Coline was introduced to Happy Perez, a fellow Houstonian and producer who has worked with Miguel, Mariah Carey and Frank Ocean to name a few. They collaborated on a song called, ‘Give and Take’, that went on to become an immediate hit. ‘Give and Take’ climbed all the way to number 1 on the Houston Radio Charts. The success of the song granted Coline opportunities to open for some amazing artists such as Drake, Keyshia Cole, Monica, David Banner and TI.
She later attracted a publishing deal with EMI (now Sony ATV). Coline continued to grow as an artist and writer expanding her portfolio. Named “an artist at the forefront” by Ebony Magazine, in 2016 Coline’s single ‘Truth Is’ peaked at number 24 on Billboard’s Urban A/C charts. What’s your story as an artist?
I am a singer/songwriter born and raised in Houston TX (currently living in los angeles). I fell in love with music and dance at a young age. I was in a few girl groups growing up and sang in the gospel choir at Lamar High School. My career really began after graduating from Hampton University and releasing my first single “Give & Take” produced by Happy Perez (also the producer of my new single “Sometimes”) Give & Take went on to be #1 on radio in Houston which really opened the doors for me and my journey began. I have since had 2 billboard charting songs: Truth Is and You Tried It, and have had the opportunity to open for some of my favorite artists.
What inspired this single?
This single was co-written with Sam Hook. It was one of those sessions that happened easily. We had a conversation first…about life and the track…and the song just came together.
What are some sources of inspiration for your storytelling?
I write about things that I’ve been through, things I’ve felt or haven’t felt that I wish I did. I like to be as transparent and honest as possible in my music.
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing the album?
WIth the exception of the new single, most of my recent songs were recorded with my daughter sitting on my lap in the booth at the studio. During the lockdown, I spent alot of time in the studio and she had to roll with me. All of these songs from the upcoming project have such special memories attached to them.
Tell us about the music and the idea behind it ?
The music from my upcoming project is all about love and relationships. There is something for everyone on there. I wanted to touch on different topics as it relates to love.
What’s a record that shaped your creativity?
“Truth Is” really shaped my creativity in the sense that I think it was the first time I gave myself permission to say exactly what I wanted to say and be as blunt as I wanted to be. I freestyled that song at a time when I was angry and hurt and needed to let it all out. I didnt play it for anyone for months because I didnt know if it was actually good or if I just loved it because it was therapeutic for me. It ended being one of my most popular releases.
Who is an artist or band you look up to today?
There are so many…Beyonce, Jazmine Sullivan, Mary J Blige to name a few…
Any future projects?
Yes! The EP is up next!
Top 3 dream collaborations?
Drake, J Cole, Lil Wayne…
What does music mean to you?
Everything. Music is a universal language. It has the power to heal people, connect people, change your mood…I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love everyday.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you?
Soulful, heartfelt, Contemporary R&B
