KIANA is a Toronto based R&B artist, known for her moody, soulful and hypnotic soundscapes. Reflecting feelings of heartbreak and melancholy, the songwriter touches on how growth is often painful but beautiful. With a unique Persian and Dutch upbringing, KIANA grew up in constant change. This experience taught her the beauty in letting go and adapting and as a result her lyricism developed into a form of observation of her ever-changing environment. Her music takes its inspiration from both Toronto and European music culture, creating something which is comforting and familiar, yet distinctly her own.

OUR MUNDANE OPINION: Intimate yet bold!

1. What inspired this last release?

The inspiration behind ‘chaos’ is self-forgiveness. As someone who tends to blame themselves for situations not working out, ‘chaos’ was that milestone in my life where i could let go of the pain that I was going through without the need to put the blame on anybody. Its about making peace, and letting the chaos sit exactly where it is.

2. What is something you can’t live without?

Advil, because of my stubborn migraines!

3. Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?

We watched the entirety of ‘spirited away’ while recording this, which could have inspired the song more or less

4. What’s your favorite thing to do besides music?

I love to lay in the sun. That’s why Toronto’s winters result in my saddest music. Aside from that, I really love to travel and experience new places and cities. Germany is currently next in my life!

5. Who is an artist or band you look up to today?

It would definitely be Amy Winehouse without a doubt. I think her range and tone are so unique, and even the stories she tells. She was always so authentic to herself and so badass. Currently I’m listening to a lot of female artists like Mariah the Scientist and Ama Lou. There’s always so much you can learn from how women are breaking in music today, when it comes down to their stage presence, visuals, and their persistency/consistency.

7. What excites you the most about what you do?

The sense of relief after pouring my heart out writing a song, working with artists that I look up to, and the people I get to meet from all around the world.
