Maryze is a queer bilingual singer-songwriter based in Montreal. Her stormy-sweet alt pop conjures a haunting universe, blending electronic beats with fiery, introspective lyrics on mental health, feminism and sexuality. Maryze released her debut EP Like Moons in 2019 which charted on Spotify’s Viral 50 Canada and launched a month-long North American tour. Following this EP, Maryze released a sling of singles in 2020-2021 including ‘Squelettes’ featuring Polaris prize winner Backxwash and retro pop banger ‘Too Late’.

Emo is the song Maryze always wanted to write to her high school boyfriend. It tells the tale of a love story turned toxic, when you realize the person you thought you knew never really cared. “Did you ever listen to the songs I sent to you?” she asks repeatedly, sounding hurt and angry that her ex never took the time for things that meant something to her. She’s at a point where she’s checked out and numb, no longer fighting for a relationship that isn’t working anymore.

What do you think is the most important aspect of your life right now?

I think probably just staying true to myself, figuring out what I really want and taking concrete action to move towards it. After the past couple years, I’ve realized how important it is to follow what makes me happy, and that is definitely music.

What makes your latest track “Emo” special in your opinion?

Well, I’ve never released a bitter breakup song and this one feels particularly triumphant. It’s my first “rock” song as a solo artist and my inner teen is happy to pay homage to my emo/pop-punk influences. I like that it has stripped-back acoustic moments and intimate vocals.

What inspired this track?

A toxic ex who thought my high school music tastes were embarrassing and never listened to my favourite songs I sent him haha.

What are some of the core messages here?

When I wrote “Emo” I was reflecting on a time when I felt numb and disillusioned. I realized the relationship I had been fighting for was very unhealthy for me. It captures the moment when you step back from the situation and see the person you thought you knew for who they really are.

How do you think tik tok and social media are contributing to change an artist’s career?

In my opinion, TikTok is one of the best ways currently to grow as an artist! You can reach a wider audience and connect with your kind of folks from all over. But it’s also important to not get too caught up in the constant stream of social media and check out of the virtual world when you need to.

What excites you about your life?

That’s a big question! I see more potential and opportunity in my future than ever before. I’m excited to see how far I can go and keep surprising myself along the way.
