At just 20, rising pop-alternative star and mental health advocate Luke Revyn (pronounced Raven) hopes to become the spokesperson for his generation. The LA-based artist wants to reach the masses to help youth struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, feeling alienated and longing to belong, or battling inner demons.
What inspired this last release?
My new single “Another Day” is a song that feels like it’s been in the making for a long time. Meaning, even though it was written fairly recent the experiences that were needed in order to create it are things that have been happening through entire life. Coming from a small town I always felt like I didn’t fit in with the other kids that I grew up with. I was always more interested in creativity and the act of creating rather than the popular physical activities which most of my piers grew up doing. This song is an expression of how I felt being the “outcast” and searching for “another day” where I might feel like I fit it. However what I came to learn was not that I wanted to fit in but rather find purpose.
What is something you can’t live without?
In all honesty besides music and making music I find the most enjoyment in art. I’m a very avid consumer of movies, tv shows, video games, and really any form of creative content.
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?
When I recorded this song it was actually my second time ever being in a LA studio. So naturally I was nervous compared to the in basement self rigged setup I had been use to using. While nothing funny happened besides normal banter between me and my producer it was a very special experience for me being that by the end of the session I felt like I really found my flow working in such an unfamiliar setting.
What’s your favorite thing to do besides music?
Besides making music my favorite past time is just spending quality time with my loved ones and friends. From a very young age family values were something strongly instilled into my life and something I still feel is extremely important. Whether it’s playing board games, watching a movie, or just having an open and honest conversation I find immense joy and comfort in being around those I love and trust.
What’s a record or artist that shaped your creativity?
I’ve always had a very deep connection with rock music and grew up listening to a lot of old school bands. In particular I’m a huge fan of Led Zeppelin, Guns n Roses, and Nirvana. However my all time favorite genre of rock is definitely early 2000s hard rock. My favorite band of all time is definitely Three Days Grace and their project One-X was a huge part of my interest in making music. I just fell in love with their ability to tell a story with such powerful emotion behind every word.
Who is an artist or band you look up to today?
Someone I’ve been really into recently is Sueco. I love the fact that he is able to bring elements of hard rock while also adding a very modern spin on his songs. He also has an incredible story which I’ve found to be very relatable to my life and does any amazing job of expressing his journey, the good and the bad, through his music.
What excites you the most about what you do?
The most exciting part about this whole journey besides the fact that I get to entertain and add value to someone’s life is the fact that Im also able to find self growth through the process as well. Music to me is so healing and has been such an important part of my development through mental health, addiction, and a plethora of other life circumstances. I think that having the opportunity to also help others through similar bumps in the road by sharing ones own story is honestly priceless. My biggest fear in life has always been that I wouldn’t be able to create a positive legacy. Meaning all I’ve ever wanted is to be remembered as someone who made a positive impact on the lives of the people around me. So what’s so special about the music is that I’m able to reach so many more people and share my story in an effort to hopefully help, better, or at least add entertainment value to my listeners lives.
