“This song was kind of the foundation of this new album. It was the first I wrote and I became increasingly fascinated by how divisive the symbolism of a mirror can become. I think it’s a beautiful thing to look back at who you’ve been and embrace that person in order to move forward. After living in New York for a couple years, I started to become this person that felt I had to neglect the shame I felt in regard to myself years prior.
After spending some time away from that culture, I started to see through the smoke; everyone was running away from who they’ve been. There was a deep sadness to that, and so I used Beacon [of the Mirror] to act as commentary and an illustration of that culture.”
