Nashville’s Caitlin Rose shares the 10-year anniversary of her debut album, Own Side Now, with a deluxe, fully remastered version of the record, today via ATO Records. The release is celebrated with the unveiling of Rose’s first new songs in eight years: “Whatchoo” and Only Lies” — the latter coming complete with an official live performance video, also out today.
On the just-released video for the brand new single, “Only Lies,” Rose says, “The video was something Jordan Lehning and I recorded for a telethon back in 2020. We were definitely in a rush to get it done, but we’d been doing a lot of demos and still having fun toying around with different mics. As soon as he busted out that RCA KU3A it was like I’d just met a ghost. It turned out to be his great uncle’s mic who was a Hollywood sound guy in the 50’s and even worked on some Hitchcock. The fact that it had shared an era and a soundstage with some iconic films definitely added a mood to this, but it is funny considering we just shot this on an iPhone.”

What’s your story as an artist?
I started writing songs because I couldn’t tell people how I felt.
What do you want your music to communicate?
That the more time you spend with a feeling the more interesting it becomes. That sometimes it’s better to write slowly.
What are some sources of inspiration for your storytelling?
Astrological events, things people have said to me, anything unrequited and Standards (the compositions not the caliber).
Who is an artist that you look up to more than others today?
Kendrick Lamar. Mitski. Ryley Walker’s twitter account.
What’s the record or artist that made you realize you wanted to be an artist?
Mirah’s Advisory Committee, Merle Haggard’s Greatest Hits
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about.
I tried and failed to make an album for 7 years so I crawled under a rock and wrote some “rock songs.” It was supposed to happen really fast, but a pandemic happened and I had a whole year to work on it.
What inspires your sound?
Everything I downloaded off of Napster from the years 2000-2004, horror movies and my own playlists.
What’s your favorite tune of yours?
If it ended up on a record, it’s a favorite — unless it’s “Menagerie.” which is my least favorite.
Where are some things you really want to accomplish as an artist?
Honestly, just putting out the next record would be enough for me.
Favorite lyric you ever wrote?
Love is just one more useless thing you don’t need, but you can’t throw away
Was there ever a moment when you felt like giving up?
So, so, so many.
What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
“Don’t whistle while you’re pissin’, kid.”
Where do you think the next game changer will be in the music industry and entertainment scene?
Lubbock, Texas.
