Tell us who Sally Boy is

It’s best to describe this project as the first thing I’ve created truly feeling like myself. It’s the first project I feel like my own production style has shown and the writing feels more intentional. That’s what I set out to make this project. One led by intention and direction, so I’d say the genesis was the journey of me trusting myself enough to recognize my own creative vision and direction and following it. For sure a labor of love but I’ve learned so much that I’m confident it will show in my projects to come and is what makes this project so special.

What is a song of yours you’re particularly proud of?

On this project I’d probably say Martha is my favorite because I think it speaks truest to a feeling of inadequacy I’ve felt for a long time and haven’t had the words to express. Listening back its almost like a therapy for me and I can appreciate it as a listener rather than get caught up in the fact that its my song.

All time is an impossible question to answer though. I’ve written hundreds of songs and fallen in and out of love with them more times than I can count. What is my favorite today may be trash tomorrow by my standards so i’m not sure. There’s no consistency in my opinions and there’s definitely no rhyme or reason 🙂

Who are your all time musical icons?

Frank Ocean, Paul McCartney, Ray Charles & Lady Gaga.

What are your main sources of inspiration?

Actually taking advantage of being alive always seems to stoke the flame. Going outside, reading, new relationships (both romantic and platonic), just things that stimulate me mentally. Nothing quells inspiration like sitting in my room doing absolutely nothing, but unfortunately doing nothing is the easiest thing to do at times. So yeah, just actually living my life is the best inspiration.

Who are you binge listening to these days?

Pretty much anything Solomonophonic touches. His production style is unique and bridges so many different sonics that I never get tired of it. Also been rocking with Spill Tab heavy and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the goat Françoise Hardy.

Favorite movie or TV show?

My two favorite TV shows are Adventure Time and The Sopranos in that order. Honorable mention to Over the Garden Wall.

Tell us about your latest album and how it came about

My latest release is my song Chess & Checkers and it’s probably one of the easiest songs I’ve ever made. I was driving down the road in my dad’s car when I was back home and it sort of just came to me (i’d been playing a lot of chess) and then I got home and banged out the guitars, choruses, and first verse in maybe 45 minutes. Then I brought it to my homie/producer TJ and we knocked the song out in maybe 3-4 sessions? Super easy, super light, that’s the way I think all music should be made. You can tell otherwise.

Where can we usually find you before and after a show?

I mean it’s been a minute since I’ve played a show and even longer since I played consistently but back then there wasn’t anything too absurd. Back when I was playing basement shows the ritual was to get drunk before shows but I wouldn’t call that peculiar by any means. Something I’m really trying to start doing is just to sit in the moment after a show. It’s easy to get caught up in the commotion of seeing people after you perform and the high of seeing peoples reactions, but sitting with yourself and realizing the special nature of what you just did is also important because those moments don’t come along often.

What’s the future looking like for you?

Staying alive and being happy. That’s all I could really ask for. I’d like to be healthy and go on tour as well. Playing live is my lifeblood so that’d be tight

Who inspires your looks and fits?

Definitely my friends. My homies got crazy style so honestly I just try to keep up with them. I ain’t got the bread to be dripped out in brands so gotta stay even with the folks in the same tax bracket you know? Moral of the story: get friends who constantly look better than you and try to match em.

What is the highest moment of your career so far?

Winning a 7th Super Bowl for the Philadelphia eagles in Madden. So happy to bring that immortal legacy to my hometown city of Philadelphia. Nah but for real I think it would be the Sally Boy Show. That was a really cool way to prove to myself that I was capable of other art forms. I’d always wanted to write comedy/tv so being able to actually make a long form comedy type content piece was really cool to see come to fruition. Can’t wait for the Sally Boy Show 2!

What do you think is the best way to make it as an artist nowadays?

Being true to yourself and finding ways to be happy beyond just your music. It’s easy to try and fit some mold of what you think an artist is supposed to be like and try and fit into it but you’ll always end up losing a lil bit of yourself in the process which will ultimately leave you unhappy. In that same vein, throwing all of your time and effort into only your music/artistry is a good thing, you should be ambitious, but when things go wrong or you self doubt it’s very easy to spiral into fits of depression etc. So it’s good to find small things outside of music that make you happy as well as having good support systems around you.

What would you change in the music and entertainment industry especially after this past year?

I’m sure some people would say tik tok or something along those lines but I think it’s sort of unnecessary to shit talk the music industry. It’s a representation of consumers so unfortunately its never going to reflect the artists that make it up entirely. That being said, I think that artists are pressured to create quantity>quality now and expected to create a consistent flow of content that continually represents them. That’s difficult, especially in times when you don’t feel like yourself. So I suppose the one thing to change would be patience? But again that’s difficult to implement into a business so who knows !
