This Valentine’s Day, UK emerging artist Kate Stewart chose to celebrate the right way – with the first drop from vocalist Kate Stewart.
Her new, inimitable sound debuts 2022 with a hard but truthful and relatable women’s anthem of heartbreak and finding yourself through the dark – out via The Orchard and Sony Music.
“As my first release off my upcoming album, I chose to release this powerful single as the reintroduction of Kate Stewart and to show the power we hold as women. Following a rough relationship, there are times where you may feel low, but this is a reminder that you are strong and that no man should be the reason for your downfall.” Kate reveals
“I’ve been working on a lot of music before this but it just didn’t feel right to me. This is definitely the most representative sound and the music feels authentic and special.
“I had been with major labels at a young age but after a while I just wasn’t allowed to do what I wanted to do really so I decided to go off on my own and start experimenting and looking for my sound and artistic identity.”
Kate Stewart was born and raised in Maida Vale in West London. She grew up in an artistic family: her father an entertainer, her mother a dancer, and a brother who is a globally recognized and respected music producer and songwriter. It’s no surprise she followed in their footsteps.
Kate grew up doing musical theater and went to stage school in Chiswick, which was where she discovered her passion for the stage. The ultimate discovery was that as well as realizing the magnitude of her vocalist capabilities and strength, she was deeply in love with singing and moved forward with working as a recording artist.
Growing up she loved the timeless female icons; Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey. They heavily inspired her earlier music and were the catalysts for her later love for music.
“Hate You” was orchestrated by a team of legends:
● Grammy-winning and 6 times Grammy-nominee, Swagg R’Celious – (H.E.R., Kehlani, Snoh Aalegra, Tone Stith, K.Michelle, Zhavia Ward, Justine Sky) ● Grammy-nominated record producer and songwriter, Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman – (The Stepkids, J.Cole, H.E.R, Mac Miller, Anderson Paak)
● Grammy Award winning producer, Ronny FLIP Colson – (Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, H.E.R, Usher, Miguel, Jhene Aiko, Ella Mai…)
“Anyone who knows me would probably say that I’m a calm and soft person but with my music I unleash my most aggressive and blunt traits. I love “I Hate You’ so much because it says what I want to say without beating around the bush. I love its dark energy and aggressiveness. It’s a bit ‘bitchy’ I guess but you know what, sometimes you have to be!”
The accompanying music video, creative directed by the iconic Betsy Johnson (stylist, fashion icon, creative director for DONDA Kanye West) and directed by Jack Bowden (Nike, HP, Primark, Boohoo and Trivago), is curated with a timeless touch and a thick aura of the speakeasy underworld.
The visuals showcase Kate, dressed in an alluring custom-made leather corset dress piece designed by Luis De Javier, performing in a lowly-lit speakeasy-esque location to a group of vile, pig-like men with disfigured facial features and scar-like marks.
“The visual aspect of my act is fundamental to me and this video is the perfect example of that. We wanted to convey somewhat of a demonic and dark vibe mixed with a strong cinematic aspect. There’s a strong thriller movie undertone to the whole project which makes mysterious and quite haunting!”
