ElementxL, one of the most exciting emerging artists in EORA’s music scene, is gearing up to release his latest single, “Playing Games”, on November 29, 2024. Known for his genre-defying sound that blends R&B, Indie, and Hip Hop influences, ElementxL continues to push boundaries and deliver fresh, relatable music.
“Playing Games” takes listeners on a groovy, emotional journey, capturing the rollercoaster ride of trying to connect with someone who’s emotionally distant. With its smooth, melodic guitar lines and infectious R&B vibes, the track showcases ElementxL’s signature flow and introspective lyricism. The song explores the uncertainty and excitement that come with modern romance, a theme ElementxL describes as both “lighthearted and fun” yet deeply real.
“It’s all about the ups and downs of meeting someone new, not knowing what’s gonna happen. There’s so much uncertainty, but it’s also a part of the fun!” says ElementxL.
What’s the story behind this single? Why this title?
“Playing Games” is about the emotional rollercoaster of wanting something that feels impossible, especially when someone’s unavailable. You’re drawn to them, but deep down, you know it’s not going to work out. The title reflects the chase and the push-and-pull emotions that come with it. Ultimately, it’s about finding peace with what you can’t control.
What inspires your blend of genres and musical styles?
I listen to a wide variety of styles, so those influences naturally show up in my music. It’s more about feeling out the song in the moment—whether it’s a laid-back vibe or something more upbeat—and letting those influences come through organically. I think genre fusion is the most authentic way for me to express myself.
What’s the main message behind it?
The main message of “Playing Games” is finding peace with uncertainty. It’s easy to get caught up in emotions and try to force things, but sometimes you just have to accept the situation and move on. I hope listeners take away a sense of calm and understanding, especially if they’ve gone through something similar.
How do your lyrics, themes, and storytelling develop?
My lyrics are based on what I’m feeling at the time. “Playing Games” came from a personal experience where emotions got complicated. I try to let the themes flow naturally, capturing the rawness of the situation while keeping it relatable. It’s all about expressing what I’m going through in a way that others can connect with.
What are the main themes of your visual storytelling when you come up with your visuals?
For visuals, I wanted something raw and authentic, much like the production of the song. I kept it pretty stripped-back, so I used some video effects over a one-take performance of the song, filmed on the rooftop of my apartment.
How does this track fit in with your previous releases?
“Playing Games” marks a shift from my earlier singles like “Hazy” and “NOSEBLEED.” Those tracks had different vibes—”NOSEBLEED” was more hip-hop influenced, and “Hazy” had a lo-fi, stripped-back feel. “Playing Games” has a more laid-back, summer vibe, with a bit of blues and jazz influence in the guitar. But the process remains the same—DIY, recorded at home, capturing whatever I’m feeling.
What were some genres, records, or artists that brought you up artistically?
I grew up listening to a mix of genres, which shaped my approach to music. I was raised on grunge, hardcore/metal, hip-hop, and alternative music, and as I got older, I expanded my tastes. But no matter the genre, I’m always drawn to music with raw emotional energy, which I aim to bring into my work today. It’s all about finding a sound that feels true to who I am in the moment.
What inspired the production and sonic aspect of this track?
The production of “Playing Games” was inspired by bedroom producers. I wanted that laid-back, groovy vibe—something mellow yet emotionally rich. I incorporated more guitar this time, blending different musical influences, to create a sound that felt both fresh and grounded.
What are your plans for 2025?
In 2025, I plan to push the boundaries with my music even further. Fans can expect more diversity in my releases. I’m also really excited to perform live— that’s where my music truly comes to life. Expect more energy, good vibes, and a lot of new music that I’m eager to share with everyone!
